Most Important Key Points & Rules
- Cell Organelles: Mitochondria = Powerhouse of the Cell (ATP formation), Ribosome = Protein Factory, Lysosome = Suicidal Bag.
- Blood Groups: O Negative (O⁻) = Universal Donor, AB Positive (AB⁺) = Universal Acceptor.
2 Quick Exam Tricks
- Vitamins Solubility Trick: याद रखो "KEDA" (कीड़ा) – Vitamin K, E, D, A Fat-soluble (वसा में घुलनशील) हैं। बचे हुए B और C Water-soluble (पानी में घुलनशील) हैं।
- Plant Tissues Shortcut: Xylem = जल (Water) transport, Phloem = फल/Food (Nutrients) transport.
2 Common Mistakes
Biology Revision Notes for SSC CGL
1. Concept
Biology is the branch of science that studies living organisms, their physical structure, chemical processes, molecular interactions, physiological mechanisms, development, and evolution.
For SSC CGL General Awareness, Biology is primarily divided into two main domains:
- Zoology and Human Physiology: The study of animal life, organ systems (digestive, circulatory, nervous, respiratory, endocrine), human diseases, nutrition, and genetics.
- Botany: The study of plant life, plant tissues (xylem and phloem), photosynthesis, plant hormones, and plant reproduction.
Questions in SSC CGL are largely factual, direct, and NCERT-based (Class 6 to 10 level), focusing heavily on cell structure, human diseases, vitamins, and physiological systems.
2. Important Facts, Systems, and Rules
A. Cytology (Cell Biology)
- Cell: The basic structural and functional unit of life. Discovered by Robert Hooke (1665) in cork tissue.
- Nucleus: Known as the "Brain of the Cell." Discovered by Robert Brown (1831).
- Mitochondria: Known as the "Powerhouse of the Cell." Site of cellular respiration and ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) generation.
- Ribosomes: Known as the "Protein Factory." Responsible for protein synthesis.
- Lysosomes: Known as "Suicide Bags." Contain digestive enzymes to break down waste or damaged cells.
- Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER):
- Rough ER (RER): Has ribosomes; synthesizes proteins.
- Smooth ER (SER): Lacks ribosomes; synthesizes lipids/fats.
- Difference between Plant and Animal Cells:
- Plant cells have a cell wall (made of cellulose), large central vacuoles, and plastids (chloroplasts).
- Animal cells lack cell walls and chloroplasts, and have centrioles.
B. Vitamins, Sources, and Deficiencies
- Water-soluble Vitamins: Vitamin B-complex, Vitamin C.
- Fat-soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E, K.
- Vitamin A (Retinol): Deficiency causes Night Blindness and Xerophthalmia.
- Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): Deficiency causes Beri-beri.
- Vitamin B3 (Niacin): Deficiency causes Pellagra.
- Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin): Contains Cobalt. Deficiency causes Pernicious Anemia.
- Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): Deficiency causes Scurvy (bleeding gums). Destroyed easily by heat.
- Vitamin D (Calciferol): Synthesized in skin via sunlight. Deficiency causes Rickets (in children) and Osteomalacia (in adults).
- Vitamin E (Tocopherol): Acts as an antioxidant; deficiency causes reduced fertility and muscle weakness.
- Vitamin K (Phylloquinone): Essential for blood clotting.
C. Human Circulatory & Blood System
- Normal Blood Pressure: 120/80 mm Hg (Systolic/Diastolic).
- Blood Composition: Plasma (roughly 55%), Formed Elements (RBCs, WBCs, Platelets ≈ 45%).
- RBC (Erythrocytes): Biconcave, lack nucleus (in mature human RBCs), lifespan of roughly 120 days. Contain iron-rich hemoglobin.
- WBC (Leukocytes): Provide immunity; lack hemoglobin.
- Blood Groups (ABO System): Discovered by Karl Landsteiner.
- Universal Donor: O negative (O−) (specifically lacks A, B, and Rh antigens).
- Universal Recipient: AB positive (AB+).
D. Plant Physiology
- Xylem: Conducts water and dissolved minerals upward from roots to leaves (unidirectional).
- Phloem: Transports prepared food (sugars) from leaves to other plant parts (bidirectional).
- Photosynthesis Equation:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Sunlight → C₆H₁₂O₆ (Glucose) + 6O₂
3. Solved Examples (Exam Style)
Example 1
Question: Which organelle is referred to as the "Suicide Bag" of the cell?
(a) Ribosome
(b) Lysosome
(c) Mitochondrion
(d) Golgi apparatus
Solution:
- Step 1: Recall the primary function of each organelle.
- Step 2: Ribosomes synthesize proteins; Mitochondria produce ATP; Golgi bodies package molecules.
- Step 3: Lysosomes contain powerful hydrolytic (digestive) enzymes. When a cell is severely damaged, lysosomes burst and their enzymes digest their own cell.
- Correct Answer: (b) Lysosome
Example 2
Question: A deficiency of which of the following vitamins leads to poor bone mineralization, causing rickets in children?
(a) Vitamin A
(b) Vitamin C
(c) Vitamin D
(d) Vitamin K
Solution:
- Step 1: Analyze the target symptom: poor bone mineralization / rickets.
- Step 2: Bone mineralization depends directly on calcium and phosphorus absorption.
- Step 3: Vitamin D (Calciferol) facilitates the intestinal absorption of calcium. Its deficiency in children leads to soft, weak bones known as Rickets.
- Correct Answer: (c) Vitamin D
Example 3
Question: Which of the following blood groups can safely receive blood of any ABO group in an emergency transfusion?
(a) O negative
(b) A positive
(c) B negative
(d) AB positive
Solution:
- Step 1: Identify the definition of Universal Recipient.
- Step 2: A person who can accept blood from all ABO groups must not have antibodies that attack incoming A or B antigens.
- Step 3: Group AB has both A and B antigens on RBC surfaces and neither anti-A nor anti-B antibodies in plasma. Rh-positive blood also carries no anti-Rh antibodies.
- Correct Answer: (d) AB positive
Example 4
Question: Which plant tissue is responsible for the transport of water and soluble minerals from the roots to the aerial parts of the plant?
(a) Sclerenchyma
(b) Collenchyma
(c) Phloem
(d) Xylem
Solution:
- Step 1: Differentiate between vascular tissues: Xylem and Phloem.
- Step 2: Phloem transports synthesized organic food (nutrients) from leaves.
- Step 3: Xylem forms continuous tubes that conduct water and dissolved minerals upward from roots.
- Correct Answer: (d) Xylem
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- Fat-Soluble Vitamins Mnemonic: "K-E-D-A" (KEDA)
- Remember the Hindi word KEDA (insects/bugs) = K, E, D, A are soluble in fat. All other major vitamins (B and C) are soluble in water.
- Plant Vascular Tissues Sound Association:
- Xylem = Jal (Water in Hindi; sounds like X-J transport).
- Phloem = Food (Ph sounds like F).
- Universal Blood Donor vs Recipient:
- O gives to Others (Universal Donor: O negative).
- All Blood is accepted by AB (Universal Recipient: AB positive).
- Leukocyte Abundance Order (Highest to Lowest):
- Mnemonic: Never Let Monkeys Eat Bananas
- Neutrophils (60–70%) > Lymphocytes (20–30%) > Monocytes (2–8%) > Eosinophils (1–4%) > Basophils (0.5–1%).
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing O+ and O− as Universal Donor:
- Mistake: Selecting O+ as the universal donor.
- Correction: O− lacks the Rh antigen entirely, making it safe for both Rh+ and Rh− recipients. O+ cannot be safely given to an Rh− individual.
- Confusing Endocrine and Exocrine Glands:
- Endocrine glands are ductless and release hormones directly into the blood (e.g., Thyroid, Pituitary).
- Exocrine glands have ducts and secrete enzymes/sweat/saliva (e.g., Salivary glands, Sweat glands).
- Note: The Pancreas is a heterocrine (mixed) gland performing both functions.
- Bacterial vs Viral Diseases Confusion:
- Tuberculosis, Cholera, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Pertussis are Bacterial.
- Polio, Dengue, Rabies, Measles, Influenza, and Hepatitis are Viral.
- Malaria and Amoebiasis are Protozoan.
- Mixing up Bile Production and Storage:
- Bile juice is produced by the Liver, but it is stored and concentrated in the Gallbladder.
