Calendar and Clock: Notes और MCQ Practice
Quantitative Aptitude • RRB Paramedical
Important Formulas & Rules
- Ordinary Year = 365 days = 52 Weeks + 1 Odd Day
- Leap Year = 366 days = 52 Weeks + 2 Odd Days
- Century Leap Year Rule: Normal years 4 से divide होने चाहिए, लेकिन Century years (जैसे 1600, 2000) 400 से divide होने पर ही Leap Year होते हैं।
- Hand Speeds: Minute Hand = 6°/minute, Hour Hand = 0.5°/minute
- Angle between Hands: Angle = |(30 × H) − (11 ÷ 2 × M)|
- Coincidence & Opposite: दोनों hands 12 hours में 11 बार overlap (0°) करते हैं और 11 बार opposite (180°) होते हैं।
2 Quick Tricks
- Mirror Image Time Trick: किसी भी Clock time का Mirror Image निकालने के लिए उसे सीधे 11:60 में से subtract कर दें।
Example: 8:20 का mirror time = 11:60 − 8:20 = 3:40.
- Ratio Trick (1:5): अगर Hour और Minute का ratio 1:5 हो (जैसे 4:20 या 6:30), तो direct Angle = Minute ÷ 2 होता है। (4:20 पर angle = 20 ÷ 2 = 10°).
2 Common Mistakes
- 1900 को Leap Year मानना: Candidates 1900 को 4 से divide करके leap year समझ लेते हैं। Century year को हमेशा 400 से check करें (1900 leap year नहीं है, 2000 था)।
- Reflex Angle भूल जाना: Formula से हमेशा smaller angle निकलता है। Exam में अगर Reflex Angle पूछा हो, तो value को (360° − Formula Angle) करना न भूलें!
Study Notes: Calendar and Clock
1. Concept
Calendar
A calendar is a system of organizing days for social, religious, commercial, or administrative purposes. For competitive exams, calendar problems revolve around finding the day of the week for a given date, finding repeating calendar years, or calculating days elapsed.
- Ordinary Year: Contains 365 days (52 complete weeks + 1 extra day). This 1 extra day is called an odd day.
- Leap Year: Contains 366 days (52 complete weeks + 2 extra days). A leap year has 2 odd days.
- Odd Days: The number of days remaining after dividing the total number of days by 7.
Clock
A clock dial is circular and divided into 60 minute spaces or 12 hour divisions, totaling 360°.
- Minute Hand (MH): Moves 360° in 60 minutes. Therefore, speed of MH = 360° ÷ 60 = 6° per minute.
- Hour Hand (HH): Moves 360° in 12 hours (720 minutes), or 30° in 1 hour. Therefore, speed of HH = 30° ÷ 60 = 0.5° (or 1/2°) per minute.
- Relative Speed: In one minute, the minute hand gains (6° − 0.5°) = 5.5° (or 11/2°) over the hour hand.
2. Important Formulas, Rules, and Facts
Calendar Rules
- Leap Year Identification:
- For non-century years: If divisible by 4, it is a leap year (e.g., 2024 is divisible by 4, so it is a leap year).
- For century years: Must be divisible by 400 (e.g., 1600 and 2000 are leap years, but 1700, 1800, and 1900 are NOT leap years).
- Odd Days in Specific Periods:
- 1 Ordinary Year = 365 ÷ 7 = 52 weeks + 1 odd day.
- 1 Leap Year = 366 ÷ 7 = 52 weeks + 2 odd days.
- 100 Years = 76 Ordinary Years + 24 Leap Years = (76 × 1) + (24 × 2) = 124 days = 17 weeks + 5 odd days.
- 200 Years = 5 × 2 = 10 days = 3 odd days.
- 300 Years = 5 × 3 = 15 days = 1 odd day.
- 400 Years = (5 × 4) + 1 (since 400th year is leap) = 21 days = 0 odd days.
- Any multiple of 400 years (800, 1200, 1600, 2000) has 0 odd days.
- Day Reference Table for Odd Days:
- 0 = Sunday
- 1 = Monday
- 2 = Tuesday
- 3 = Wednesday
- 4 = Thursday
- 5 = Friday
- 6 = Saturday
Clock Formulas
- Angle Between Hands:
- Angle (θ) = |(30 × H) − (11/2 × M)|
- Where H = Hour (1 to 12) and M = Minutes (0 to 59).
- If the calculated angle is greater than 180°, the reflex angle is calculated as: 360° − θ.
- Positions of Hands in 12 Hours vs 24 Hours:
- Coincide (0° angle): 11 times in 12 hours | 22 times in 24 hours (They do not coincide twice between 11 and 1 o'clock; they coincide only once at 12:00).
- Opposite directions (180° angle): 11 times in 12 hours | 22 times in 24 hours (Opposite only once between 5 and 7 o'clock, at 6:00).
- Right angle (90° angle): 22 times in 12 hours | 44 times in 24 hours.
3. Solved Examples
Example 1: Finding the Day on a Future Date
Question: If 15th January 2023 was a Sunday, what day of the week was 15th January 2024?
Solution:
- Step 1: Check whether the period covers an ordinary year or a leap year.
- The period runs from 15th January 2023 to 15th January 2024.
- 2023 is an ordinary year. February 2024 has not yet occurred within this date range (only January 2024 is reached).
- Step 2: Total days elapsed = 365 days.
- Step 3: Odd days = 365 ÷ 7 = 52 weeks with remainder 1 odd day.
- Step 4: Add 1 day to the given day.
- Sunday + 1 day = Monday.
Answer: Monday
Example 2: Day of the Week for an Exact Historical Date
Question: What day of the week was 26th January 1950?
Solution:
- Step 1: Break the completed years into segments: 1949 completed years + days in 1950 up to 26th January.
- Step 2: Calculate odd days in 1949 completed years:
- 1600 years = 0 odd days
- 300 years = 1 odd day
- 49 years contains: 49 ÷ 4 = 12 leap years and (49 − 12) = 37 ordinary years.
- Total odd days in 49 years = (12 × 2) + (37 × 1) = 24 + 37 = 61 days.
- 61 ÷ 7 = 8 weeks + 5 odd days.
- Total odd days up to 1949 = 0 + 1 + 5 = 6 odd days.
- Step 3: Calculate odd days in 1950 up to 26th January:
- Number of days = 26.
- 26 ÷ 7 = 3 weeks + 5 odd days.
- Step 4: Total odd days = 6 + 5 = 11 odd days.
- 11 ÷ 7 = 1 week + 4 odd days.
- Step 5: Match 4 odd days with the day table:
- 0 = Sun, 1 = Mon, 2 = Tue, 3 = Wed, 4 = Thursday.
Answer: Thursday
Example 3: Angle Between Clock Hands
Question: Find the angle between the hour hand and the minute hand of a clock at 4:20.
Solution:
- Step 1: Identify H and M.
- H = 4, M = 20.
- Step 2: Apply the angle formula:
- Angle = |(30 × H) − (11/2 × M)|
- Angle = |(30 × 4) − (11/2 × 20)|
- Angle = |120 − (11 × 10)|
- Angle = |120 − 110| = 10°
Answer: 10°
Example 4: Time When Hands Coincide
Question: At what time between 3 o'clock and 4 o'clock will the hands of a clock be together (coincide)?
Solution:
- Step 1: At 3 o'clock, the minute hand is at 12 (0 minutes) and the hour hand is at 3 (15 minute spaces ahead).
- Step 2: To coincide, the minute hand must gain 15 minute spaces over the hour hand.
- Step 3: Minute hand gains 55 minute spaces in 60 minutes.
- Time taken to gain 1 minute space = 60 ÷ 55 = 12/11 minutes.
- Time taken to gain 15 minute spaces = 15 × (12/11) = 180 ÷ 11 minutes.
- Step 4: Convert 180 ÷ 11 to a mixed fraction:
- 180 ÷ 11 = 16 (remainder 4) = 16 4/11 minutes.
Answer: 16 4/11 minutes past 3 (or 3 hours 16 4/11 minutes)
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- Calendar Repetition Shortcut:
- A leap year calendar repeats after 28 years.
- A year immediately after a leap year (Leap year + 1) repeats after 6 years.
- Other ordinary years (Leap year + 2 or Leap year + 3) repeat after 11 years.
- Example: 2024 is leap → repeats in 2024 + 28 = 2052. 2025 is (leap + 1) → repeats in 2025 + 6 = 2031.
- First and Last Day of a Year:
- Ordinary year: First day (Jan 1) and last day (Dec 31) are the same day.
- Leap year: Last day is one day ahead of the first day.
- Quick Angle Shortcut:
- If Minute : Hour is in the ratio 4:1 (e.g., 4:16, 5:20):
- Angle = 2 × Minutes (e.g., at 4:16 → 2 × 16 = 32°).
- If Minute : Hour is in the ratio 5:1 (e.g., 5:25, 6:30):
- Angle = Minutes ÷ 2 (e.g., at 6:30 → 30 ÷ 2 = 15°).
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Century Leap Year Trap: Assuming century years like 1900 or 2100 are leap years because they are divisible by 4. Century years must be divisible by 400 to be leap years.
- Reflex Angle Confusion: If an exam asks for the "interior angle" or simply "angle between hands" and your formula yields 310°, the answer should be 360° − 310° = 50°. An angle between two hands is generally considered ≤ 180° unless explicitly asked for the reflex angle.
- Forgetting February's Impact: When counting days between dates, verify whether February 29 falls inside the specific interval before adding 2 odd days. If the date range does not cross February 29 of a leap year, count only 1 odd day.
