Carbon and its Compounds (Class 10): Notes और MCQ Practice

Class 10 Science • Class 10

Important Points & Formulas

  1. Covalent Bond: Electrons शेयर करने से बनता है। इनका melting/boiling point low होता है और ये electricity conduct नहीं करते।
  2. Hydrocarbons:
  • Alkane (Saturated): Single bond, General Formula = CnH2n+2 (e.g., Methane: CH₄)
  • Alkene (Unsaturated): Double bond, General Formula = CnH2n (e.g., Ethene: C₂H₄)
  • Alkyne (Unsaturated): Triple bond, General Formula = CnH2n-2 (e.g., Ethyne: C₂H₂)
  1. Homologous Series: ऐसे compounds की series जिसमें same functional group हो; consecutive members में -CH₂- group और 14 u molecular mass का difference होता है।
  2. Important Functional Groups: Alcohol (-OH), Aldehyde (-CHO), Ketone (>C=O), Carboxylic Acid (-COOH).
  3. Important Reactions:
  • Esterification: Ethanoic acid + Ethanol (acid catalyst की मौजूदगी में) → Ester (sweet fruity smell) + Water.
  • Saponification: Ester + NaOH → Soap + Alcohol.
  • Addition Reaction: Unsaturated vegetable oils + H₂ (Ni catalyst) → Saturated fats (Ghee).
  1. Soaps & Micelles: Soap molecule में Hydrophobic tail (dirt की तरफ) और Hydrophilic ionic head (water की तरफ) होता है।

Memory Tricks

  • Trick 1 (Formula Ladder): ANE, ENE, YNE = +2, No change, -2 (Alkane = 2n+2, Alkene = 2n, Alkyne = 2n-2).
  • Trick 2 (Soap Head/Tail): PHOBIC = Phobia (Fear of water), यानी Hydrophobic tail पानी से दूर dirt में चिपकती है; PHILIC = Love, यानी Hydrophilic head पानी में रहता है।

Common Board-Exam Mistakes

  • Mistake 1: Covalent bond draw करते समय shared electrons की संख्या गलत दिखाना। याद रखें: Single bond = 2 shared electrons, Double = 4, Triple = 6.
  • Mistake 2: Hard water में Soap का झाग न बनने का कारण भूलना। Soap hard water के Ca²⁺ और Mg²⁺ ions के साथ insoluble 'Scum' बनाता है, जबकि Detergent scum नहीं बनाता।

Carbon and its Compounds

1. Chapter in Short

Carbon is an extraordinarily versatile element found in food, clothes, medicines, books, and almost all living structures. Although carbon makes up only 0.02% of the Earth's crust (as minerals like carbonates, coal) and 0.03% of the atmosphere (as carbon dioxide), its compounds outnumber those of all other elements combined.

This chapter explains:

  • Why carbon forms covalent bonds instead of ionic bonds.
  • The unique properties (catenation and tetravalency) that enable carbon to form millions of compounds.
  • Saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, functional groups, and homologous series.
  • Key chemical reactions: combustion, oxidation, addition, and substitution.
  • Two commercially important carbon compounds: Ethanol and Ethanoic acid.
  • How soaps and detergents clean dirt via micelle formation.

2. Key Concepts Explained Simply

A. Why Does Carbon Form Covalent Bonds?

  • Carbon has atomic number 6. Its electronic configuration is 2, 4. It needs 4 electrons to complete its octet (noble gas configuration).
  • Why not gain 4 electrons (form C⁴⁻)? It would be very difficult for a nucleus with 6 protons to hold onto 10 electrons.
  • Why not lose 4 electrons (form C⁴⁺)? Removing 4 electrons requires a tremendous amount of energy.
  • The Solution: Carbon overcomes this problem by sharing its valence electrons with other carbon atoms or other elements. Bonds formed by sharing electron pairs are called covalent bonds.
  • Everyday Example: Two friends sharing one textbook because neither can afford to buy a whole separate set.

B. Two Unique Properties of Carbon

  1. Catenation: Carbon has the unique ability to form bonds with other carbon atoms, creating long straight chains, branched chains, or cyclic rings. Carbon-carbon bonds are very strong and stable.
  2. Tetravalency: Carbon has a valency of 4, meaning it can bond with four other atoms (hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, etc.).

C. Saturated vs. Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

  • Saturated Hydrocarbons (Alkanes): Carbon atoms are connected by only single bonds. They burn with a clean blue flame. General formula: CnH2n+2 (e.g., Methane CH₄, Ethane C₂H₆).
  • Unsaturated Hydrocarbons (Alkenes & Alkynes): Carbon atoms contain double bonds (Alkenes: CnH2n) or triple bonds (Alkynes: CnH2n-2). They are more reactive and burn with a yellow, sooty flame. (e.g., Ethene C₂H₄, Ethyne C₂H₂).

D. Homologous Series

A family of organic compounds having the same functional group and similar chemical properties, where two successive members differ by a -CH₂- unit and 14 u in molecular mass.

  • Example: Alkanes: CH₄, C₂H₆, C₃H₈, C₄H₁₀.

E. Functional Groups

An atom or group of atoms attached to a carbon chain that determines its chemical properties:

  • Alcohol: -OH (e.g., Methanol, Ethanol)
  • Aldehyde: -CHO (e.g., Methanal, Ethanal)
  • Ketone: >C=O (e.g., Propanone)
  • Carboxylic Acid: -COOH (e.g., Ethanoic acid)
  • Halo group: -Cl, -Br (e.g., Chloromethane)

F. Chemical Properties of Carbon Compounds

  1. Combustion: Burning in oxygen gives CO₂, H₂O, heat, and light.
  • CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O + Heat + Light
  1. Oxidation: Converting alcohols to carboxylic acids using alkaline KMnO₄ (Potassium permanganate) or acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ (Potassium dichromate) as oxidizing agents.
  • CH₃CH₂OH + [O] (alkaline KMnO₄ + heat) → CH₃COOH
  1. Addition Reaction: Unsaturated hydrocarbons add hydrogen in the presence of nickel/palladium catalysts to become saturated. Used in industry for the hydrogenation of vegetable oils to make vanaspati ghee.
  2. Substitution Reaction: Saturated hydrocarbons react with chlorine in the presence of sunlight, replacing hydrogen atoms one by one.
  • CH₄ + Cl₂ (in sunlight) → CH₃Cl + HCl

G. Important Compounds: Ethanol and Ethanoic Acid

  • Ethanol (C₂H₅OH): Liquid at room temperature, soluble in water, active ingredient in alcoholic drinks. Reacts with sodium to produce hydrogen gas; dehydrates with hot concentrated H₂SO₄ to form ethene.
  • Ethanoic Acid (CH₃COOH): Commonly called acetic acid. A 5-8% solution in water is vinegar. Melting point is 290 K, so it freezes in cold weather, earning the name glacial acetic acid.

H. Soaps and Detergents

  • A soap molecule is a sodium or potassium salt of long-chain carboxylic acids.
  • It has two ends:
  1. Hydrophilic head (ionic end): Loves water, dissolves in water.
  2. Hydrophobic tail (hydrocarbon chain): Hates water, dissolves in oil/grease.
  • Micelle Formation: In water, soap molecules arrange themselves into spherical clusters (micelles). The oily dirt is trapped in the center of the sphere, while the ionic heads point outwards toward water. On rinsing, the micelles wash away with water.
  • Hard Water Issue: Hard water contains Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions. Soap reacts with these ions to form an insoluble white precipitate called scum. Detergents do not form scum with hard water because their charged ends do not form precipitates with Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺.

3. Important Definitions, Formulas, and Facts

  • Covalent Bond: A chemical bond formed by the mutual sharing of electron pairs between two atoms.
  • Allotropes of Carbon: Different physical forms of carbon with the same chemical properties: Diamond (rigid 3D structure), Graphite (hexagonal layers, good conductor of electricity), and Buckminsterfullerene (C₆₀, football shape).
  • Hydrocarbon Formulas:
  • Alkane: CnH2n+2
  • Alkene: CnH2n
  • Alkyne: CnH2n-2
  • Esterification Reaction: Reaction of an alcohol with a carboxylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst to produce a sweet-smelling ester.
  • CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH (acid catalyst) → CH₃COOC₂H₅ (Ethyl ethanoate) + H₂O
  • Saponification: Alkaline hydrolysis of an ester to regenerate alcohol and the sodium salt of carboxylic acid (soap).
  • CH₃COOC₂H₅ + NaOH → CH₃COONa (Soap) + C₂H₅OH
  • Dehydration of Ethanol:
  • C₂H₅OH (Hot concentrated H₂SO₄ at 443 K) → CH₂=CH₂ + H₂O
  • Vinegar: 5% to 8% solution of acetic acid in water.

4. Solved Board-Style Questions

Question 1

Why does carbon form compounds mainly by covalent bonding rather than forming C⁴⁺ or C⁴⁻ ions?

Answer:

  1. Carbon has 4 electrons in its outermost shell (electronic configuration 2, 4).
  2. If it gains 4 electrons to form C⁴⁻, it would be extremely difficult for the nucleus with 6 protons to hold 10 electrons.
  3. If it loses 4 electrons to form C⁴⁺, it would require a huge amount of energy to remove 4 successive electrons from the pull of the nucleus.
  4. Therefore, carbon overcomes this energy barrier by sharing its valence electrons with other atoms, forming stable covalent bonds.

Question 2

How can you chemically distinguish between an alcohol (Ethanol) and a carboxylic acid (Ethanoic acid)?

Answer:

Use the Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate test (or Sodium Carbonate test):

  • Add a pinch of sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO₃) or sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) to both test tubes.
  • Ethanoic acid reacts vigorously producing brisk effervescence due to the evolution of Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) gas, which turns lime water milky:

CH₃COOH + NaHCO₃ → CH₃COONa + H₂O + CO₂

  • Ethanol does not react with sodium hydrogen carbonate and gives no effervescence.

Question 3

What is an addition reaction? Give one industrial application with a balanced chemical equation.

Answer:

An addition reaction is a reaction in which unsaturated hydrocarbons add another substance (such as hydrogen) across their double or triple bonds in the presence of a catalyst to form a saturated hydrocarbon.

  • Industrial Application: Hydrogenation of vegetable oils. Liquid vegetable oils (unsaturated compounds) are converted into solid vegetable ghee/margarine (saturated fats) by passing hydrogen gas in the presence of a nickel catalyst at high temperatures:

R₂C=CR₂ + H₂ (in presence of Ni catalyst) → R₂CH-CHR₂

(where R is an alkyl group)

Question 4

Explain the cleansing action of soap. Why does soap fail to clean properly in hard water?

Answer:

  1. Cleansing Action:
  • A soap molecule has an ionic hydrophilic head (attracted to water) and a hydrocarbon hydrophobic tail (attracted to oil/dirt).
  • When soap is added to water containing dirty clothes, the hydrophobic tails dissolve in the oil/dirt droplet, while the ionic heads stick out into the water.
  • This forms a spherical structure called a micelle.
  • When agitated, the micelles remain suspended as an emulsion in water and are easily rinsed away, carrying the dirt with them.
  1. Action in Hard Water:
  • Hard water contains dissolved calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) salts.
  • Soap reacts with these ions to form an insoluble curdy precipitate called scum.
  • A large amount of soap is wasted reacting with these ions before it can produce lather, making it ineffective in hard water.

5. Common Mistakes and Quick Revision Points

  • Mistake: Writing the formula of ethanoic acid as C₂H₆O.

Correction: Ethanoic acid is CH₃COOH (molecular formula C₂H₄O₂). C₂H₆O is the formula for ethanol (C₂H₅OH).

  • Mistake: Confusing addition with substitution reactions.

Quick Rule: Saturated compounds undergo substitution (replacement of H by Cl). Unsaturated compounds undergo addition (breaking of double/triple bonds to add atoms).

  • Mistake: Thinking detergents also form scum in hard water.

Remember: Detergents do NOT form scum with hard water because their charged ends (sulfonates/ammonium salts) do not form insoluble precipitates with Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺.

  • Quick Revision Checklist:
  • Diamond has zero free electrons (does not conduct electricity); Graphite has one free electron per carbon atom (conducts electricity).
  • Concentrated H₂SO₄ acts as a dehydrating agent when heating ethanol at 443 K.
  • Alkaline KMnO₄ and acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ are oxidizing agents.
