Cell: The Building Block of Life (Class 9): Notes और MCQ Practice
Class 9 Science • Class 9
Key Points, Formulas & Definitions
- Limit of Resolution (Human Eye): 0.1 mm (viewed from ~25 cm).
- Cell Size Formula: Estimated size of cell = Diameter of visible field in µm ÷ Number of cells along the diameter (1 mm = 1000 µm).
- Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane): 7–10 nm thick, selectively permeable lipid bilayer (water-attracting heads बाहर, water-repelling tails अंदर) with embedded proteins (Fluid-mosaic model).
- Diffusion & Osmosis: Diffusion particles का net movement है (higher to lower concentration). Osmosis selectively permeable membrane के through water का diffusion है (dilute solution से concentrated solution की तरफ).
- Solutions का असर:
- Hypotonic: Water enters → Cell swells.
- Hypertonic: Water leaves → Cell shrinks (Plant cell में content shrink होता है, rigid cellulose cell wall shape बनाए रखती है).
- Isotonic: Concentrations equal → No net change.
- Prokaryote vs Eukaryote: Prokaryote (1–10 µm, no membrane-bound nucleus/organelles, nucleoid present); Eukaryote (10–100 µm, true nucleus, membrane-bound organelles).
- Key Organelles:
- Nucleus: Double membrane, contains chromatin/DNA/genes; nucleolus makes ribosomal subunits.
- Ribosomes: Protein synthesis sites.
- RER: Ribosomes लगे होते हैं; protein synthesis & secretion.
- SER: No ribosomes; fats (lipids) और hormones का synthesis & storage.
Memory Tricks
- RER vs SER: RER = Rough = Ribosomes attached (makes pRoteins). SER = Smooth = Slippery fats/lipids synthesis.
- Pro vs Eu: Pro = Primitive nucleus (no true membrane, nucleoid). Eu = True nucleus (well-defined).
Common Board-Exam Mistakes
Cell: The Building Block of Life
1. Chapter in Short
This chapter introduces the fundamental unit of all living organisms: the cell. Life is believed to have originated in water around 3.5 billion years ago, similar to the extreme conditions found today in the hot springs of Puga Valley in Ladakh. All living things are either single-celled (unicellular) or made of many cells (multicellular).
Cells group together to form tissues, tissues form organs, and organs form organ systems. Because cells are extremely small, we use light and electron microscopes to view them. A typical cell is enclosed by a selectively permeable plasma membrane and (in plants, fungi, and bacteria) a protective outer cell wall. Inside lies the cytoplasm containing specialized working units called organelles (such as the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, and Golgi apparatus) that work together like parts of a living factory.
2. Key Concepts Explained Simply
A. Seeing the Invisible (Microscopy & Resolution)
- Limit of Resolution: The human eye can only distinguish two separate points if they are at least 0.1 mm apart (at a distance of 25 cm). If they are closer, they look like one dot.
- Microscopes: Use convex lenses to magnify tiny objects.
- Total Magnification = Magnifying power of eyepiece × Magnifying power of objective lens.
- Electron Microscope: Uses a beam of electrons instead of light to view structures at the nanometre (nm) scale with extreme clarity.
B. The Cell Membrane — The Fluid-Mosaic Model
- Structure: The plasma membrane is extremely thin (7 to 10 nm) and is made of lipids (fats) and proteins.
- Fluid-Mosaic Model:
- It consists of a lipid bilayer (two layers of fat molecules with water-attracting heads facing outwards and water-repelling tails facing inwards).
- Molecules can move sideways, flip, and rotate (making it fluid).
- Proteins are scattered among the lipids like tiles in a mosaic, acting as gatekeepers to allow substances in and out.
- Selective Permeability: It lets useful substances pass while blocking others.
C. How Substances Move (Diffusion and Osmosis)
- Diffusion: The natural spreading of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration (down a concentration gradient).
- Osmosis: The movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area with more water (dilute solution) to an area with less water (concentrated solution).
- Types of Solutions:
- Hypotonic Solution: The surrounding liquid has a lower solute concentration (more water) than the inside of the cell. Water enters the cell, causing it to swell.
- Hypertonic Solution: The surrounding liquid has a higher solute concentration (less water) than the inside of the cell. Water moves out, causing the cell to shrink.
- Isotonic Solution: Both inside and outside have equal solute concentrations. There is no net movement of water.
D. Cell Wall — Nature's Outer Armour
- Present outside the cell membrane in plants, fungi, and bacteria (absent in animal cells).
- In plants, it is made of cellulose (a carbohydrate of linked glucose units; acts as roughage in human food).
- Permeable: Unlike the selectively permeable membrane, the cell wall allows water and dissolved minerals to pass through freely.
- Function: Provides rigidity, maintains shape, and prevents plant cells from collapsing or bursting under environmental stresses like wind and rain.
E. Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic Cells
- Prokaryotes (e.g., Bacteria): Primitive cells without a membrane-bound nucleus. Genetic material lies in an open region called the nucleoid. They lack membrane-bound organelles.
- Eukaryotes (e.g., Plant and Animal Cells): Advanced cells with a true double-membrane-bound nucleus and specialized membrane-bound organelles.
F. The Cell Interior & Organelles
- Nucleus (The Control Centre): Enclosed by a double-layered nuclear membrane with pores. Contains the nucleolus (synthesizes ribosomal subunits) and chromatin (tangled thread-like DNA). When the cell is about to divide, chromatin condenses into rod-shaped chromosomes, which carry genes (functional segments of DNA).
- Ribosomes (Protein Factories): Tiny structures (free in cytoplasm or on the rough ER) where protein synthesis occurs.
- Endoplasmic Reticulum / ER (Manufacturing Factory):
- Rough ER (RER): Studded with ribosomes; synthesizes and secretes proteins (abundant in gland cells like the pancreas).
- Smooth ER (SER): No ribosomes; synthesizes and stores fats (lipids) and hormones.
- Golgi Apparatus (Packaging and Shipping Centre): Stacks of flattened sac-like structures that process, package, and send cellular products to various destinations.
3. Important Definitions, Formulas, Facts, and Dates
Key Definitions
- Cell: The fundamental structural and functional unit of life.
- Limit of Resolution: The minimum distance by which two points must be separated to be seen as distinct by the eye (0.1 mm for the human eye).
- Diffusion: The net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration.
- Osmosis: The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
- Selectively Permeable Membrane: A membrane that allows certain substances to pass through while preventing others.
- Nucleoid: The region in a prokaryotic cell that contains its single circular genetic material without an enclosing membrane.
- Gene: A functional segment of DNA that carries information for heredity.
Formulas & Conversions
- Total Magnification = Eyepiece Magnification × Objective Lens Magnification
- Estimated Cell Size = Diameter of visible field in micrometres (µm) ÷ Number of cells along the diameter
- Conversions:
- 1 millimetre (mm) = 1000 micrometres (µm)
- 1 nanometre (nm) = 0.000001 mm (one-billionth of a metre)
Important Facts & Historical Dates
- Early Life: Puga Valley hot springs in Ladakh host heat-loving unicellular bacteria (thermophiles), similar to early Earth conditions 3.5 billion years ago.
- 1665: Robert Hooke observed small box-like compartments in a thin slice of cork using a self-designed microscope (200–300×) and named them "cells".
- 1898: Camillo Golgi discovered the Golgi apparatus in the nerve cells of a barn owl.
- Human Red Blood Cells (RBCs): Mature RBCs lose their nucleus (enucleate) to make more room for haemoglobin to transport oxygen. Because they lack a nucleus, they cannot divide or repair themselves and live for about 120 days.
- Acellular Agents: Viruses, viroids, and prions have no cells. Viruses have genetic material and a protein coat; viroids lack a protein coat; prions are misfolded proteins that lack genetic material.
4. Solved Examples & Exam-Style Questions
Question 1 (Numerical on Cell Size Estimation)
A student observes an onion peel under a microscope. The visible circular field of view has a diameter of 4 mm. Under the lens, 20 onion cells are aligned edge-to-edge along this diameter. Calculate the estimated size of one onion cell in micrometres (µm).
Answer:
- Convert the field diameter from mm to µm:
- Diameter in µm = 4 mm × 1000 = 4000 µm
- Use the formula:
- Estimated cell size = Diameter of visible field in µm ÷ Number of cells along diameter
- Estimated cell size = 4000 µm ÷ 20 = 200 µm
Question 2 (Osmosis Experiment)
Two potato pieces of equal weight are taken. Piece A is placed in plain water, and Piece B is placed in a 20% salt solution. Predict and explain the weight changes after one hour.
Answer:
- Piece A (in plain water / hypotonic solution): Plain water has a higher water concentration than the potato cells. Water enters the potato cells by osmosis. As a result, Piece A swells and its weight increases.
- Piece B (in 20% salt solution / hypertonic solution): The salt solution has a lower water concentration than the potato cells. Water moves out of the potato cells into the solution by osmosis. As a result, Piece B shrinks and its weight decreases.
Question 3 (Plant Cells vs Animal Cells in Concentrated Solution)
What happens to a Rhoeo (cradle lily) leaf peel cell and a human cheek cell when both are kept in a concentrated sugar solution for 30 minutes? Explain the difference.
Answer:
- Rhoeo Leaf Cell (Plant Cell): Loses water due to osmosis. The inner contents shrink away from the cell wall, increasing the space between the membrane and cell wall. However, the outer boundary of the cell retains its shape because of the rigid cell wall.
- Human Cheek Cell (Animal Cell): Loses water and shrinks considerably. Because animal cells lack a rigid cell wall, their outer shape is flexible and collapses.
Question 4 (Prokaryote vs Eukaryote)
State three key differences between a bacterial cell and a plant cell based on the chapter.
Answer:
- Nucleus: A bacterial cell has a primitive nucleoid without a nuclear membrane, whereas a plant cell has a true, double-membrane-bound nucleus.
- Organelles: A bacterial cell lacks membrane-bound organelles, while a plant cell contains membrane-bound organelles (like chloroplasts, mitochondria, and ER).
- Size: A typical prokaryotic cell is smaller (1 to 10 µm in diameter), whereas a eukaryotic plant cell is larger (10 to 100 µm in diameter).
5. Common Mistakes and Quick Revision Points
Common Mistakes
- Confusing Cell Wall and Cell Membrane Permeability:
- The cell membrane is selectively permeable (strictly controls what enters and exits).
- The cell wall is permeable (freely lets water and dissolved minerals pass through).
- Confusing Diffusion with Osmosis: Diffusion applies to any moving particles across any medium (even without a barrier). Osmosis is specifically the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
- Thinking Plant Cells Disintegrate or Shrink Completely in Salt Solutions: In a hypertonic solution, only the inner contents (cytoplasm and membrane) shrink inward; the cell wall maintains the overall box-like structure of the plant cell.
- Mixing up RER and SER: Remember that Rough ER has ribosomes (makes proteins), while Smooth ER lacks ribosomes (makes fats and hormones).
