Networking and Cyber Security: Notes और MCQ Practice
Computer Knowledge • SSC CHSL
Important Rules & Key Concepts:
- Network Scope: PAN (Personal Area Network, ~10m) < LAN (Local Area, Office/School) < MAN (Metropolitan, City) < WAN (Wide Area, Internet/Global).
- OSI Model (7 Layers): Layer 1: Physical → Layer 2: Data Link → Layer 3: Network → Layer 4: Transport → Layer 5: Session → Layer 6: Presentation → Layer 7: Application.
- Addressing Rules:
- IPv4 = 32 bits (Dotted decimal, e.g., 192.168.1.1)
- IPv6 = 128 bits (Hexadecimal representation)
- MAC Address = 48 bits (Physical/Hardware address of NIC)
- Cyber Threats:
Quick Tricks (याद रखने के फंडे):
- OSI Layers (Bottom to Top): याद रखें phrase - "Please Do Not Touch Steve's Pet Alligator" (P-Physical, D-Data Link, N-Network, T-Transport, S-Session, P-Presentation, A-Application).
- Bits Count Sequence: 32, 48, 128 (IPv4 = 32 bits, MAC Address = 48 bits, IPv6 = 128 bits).
Common Mistakes (Exam
Networking and Cyber Security Study Notes
1. Concept (Simple Explanation)
Computer Networking
A computer network is a collection of computers, servers, and other hardware devices linked together by communication channels to share resources and data (e.g., printers, files, internet access).
- Types of Networks by Scale:
- PAN (Personal Area Network): Smallest range (up to 10 meters). Example: Bluetooth, personal hotspot.
- LAN (Local Area Network): Confined to a single room, office, or building. Usually privately owned.
- MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Covers an entire city or town. Example: Cable television network.
- WAN (Wide Area Network): Spans across countries or continents. Example: The Internet.
- Network Topologies (Physical Arrangement):
- Bus: Single central backbone cable with terminators at both ends. If the cable fails, the entire network fails.
- Star: All nodes connect to a central device (hub or switch). Most popular in modern LANs.
- Ring: Each node connects to exactly two neighbors, forming a closed loop (token passing).
- Mesh: Every device is connected to every other device (fully connected) or some devices (partially connected). Highly redundant and fault-tolerant, but expensive.
- Tree: Hierarchical combination of Star and Bus topologies.
- Network Hardware:
- Hub: Unintelligent device; broadcasts data to all ports (Layer 1 - Physical).
- Switch: Intelligent device; sends data specifically to the destination device using MAC addresses (Layer 2 - Data Link).
- Router: Connects different networks and forwards data packets using IP addresses (Layer 3 - Network).
- Gateway: Acts as an entrance/translator between two completely different network architectures/protocols.
- Modem (Modulator-Demodulator): Converts digital signals to analog for transmission over telephone lines, and vice versa.
- OSI 7-Layer Reference Model:
- Physical (Bits)
- Data Link (Frames)
- Network (Packets)
- Transport (Segments)
- Session (Sessions)
- Presentation (Syntax/Encryption/Compression)
- Application (User interface/Services)
- Common Protocols:
- HTTP / HTTPS: HyperText Transfer Protocol (Secure uses SSL/TLS for encryption).
- FTP: File Transfer Protocol (uploads/downloads files).
- SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (sending emails).
- POP3 / IMAP: Post Office Protocol / Internet Message Access Protocol (retrieving emails).
- DNS: Domain Name System (translates domain names like ssc.gov.in into IP addresses).
- DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (assigns IP addresses dynamically).
Cyber Security
Cyber security involves protecting computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks.
- Common Cyber Threats (Malware):
- Virus: Malicious program that attaches itself to clean files and requires user action (like opening a file) to spread.
- Worm: Standalone malware that self-replicates and spreads across networks without human intervention.
- Trojan Horse: Malware disguised as useful software (does not replicate on its own).
- Ransomware: Encrypts user files and demands a ransom for the decryption key.
- Spyware: Secretly monitors user activities (e.g., keyloggers record keystrokes).
- Common Attack Types:
- Phishing: Fraudulent emails/messages designed to trick users into revealing sensitive information (passwords, OTPs).
- Spoofing: Impersonating another device or user on a network (e.g., IP spoofing).
- DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service): Overwhelming a web server with fake traffic from multiple systems to make it unavailable.
- Man-in-the-Middle (MitM): Attacker secretly intercepts and relays communication between two parties.
- Security Tools:
- Firewall: Hardware or software that filters incoming and outgoing traffic based on security rules.
- Antivirus: Detects, quarantines, and removes malware.
- Encryption: Converting plain text into ciphertext using a key.
2. Important Formulas / Rules / Facts
- Number of physical links in a Fully Connected Mesh Topology:
Number of links = n × (n − 1) ÷ 2
(where n = number of nodes/devices)
- Number of I/O ports per device in a Mesh Topology:
Ports per node = n − 1
- Addressing Bits & Bytes:
- IPv4 Address: 32 bits (4 bytes), represented in 4 decimal numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1). Range of each octet: 0 to 255.
- IPv6 Address: 128 bits (16 bytes), represented as 8 groups of 4 hexadecimal digits separated by colons.
- MAC Address (Physical/Hardware Address): 48 bits (6 bytes), represented as 12 hexadecimal digits separated by colons or hyphens (e.g., 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E).
- Crucial Port Numbers for Exams:
- FTP: 20 (Data), 21 (Control)
- SSH: 22
- Telnet: 23
- SMTP: 25
- DNS: 53
- HTTP: 80
- POP3: 110
- IMAP: 143
- HTTPS: 443
- Email Rule:
- Sending emails: Always SMTP.
- Receiving/Retrieving emails: POP3 (downloads and deletes from server) or IMAP (syncs across devices).
3. Solved Examples (Exam Style)
Example 1
Question: A company wants to set up a fully connected mesh network in a branch office having 8 computers. How many physical transmission links (cables) are required?
Solution:
- Step 1: Identify the formula for total links in a full mesh topology:
Links = n × (n − 1) ÷ 2
- Step 2: Substitute n = 8 into the formula:
Links = 8 × (8 − 1) ÷ 2
Links = 8 × 7 ÷ 2 = 56 ÷ 2 = 28
- Answer: 28 links.
Example 2
Question: Which of the following statements correctly distinguishes between IPv4 and IPv6 addresses?
(A) IPv4 is 16 bits; IPv6 is 64 bits.
(B) IPv4 is 32 bits; IPv6 is 128 bits.
(C) IPv4 is 64 bits; IPv6 is 256 bits.
(D) IPv4 is 48 bits; IPv6 is 128 bits.
Solution:
- Step 1: Recall the standard size of IP addresses.
- Step 2: IPv4 uses 4 bytes = 4 × 8 = 32 bits.
- Step 3: IPv6 was designed to solve address exhaustion and uses 16 bytes = 16 × 8 = 128 bits.
- Answer: (B) IPv4 is 32 bits; IPv6 is 128 bits.
Example 3
Question: An employee receives an email that appears to be from their official banking partner asking them to urgently verify their login credentials via a link provided. What type of cyber attack is this?
(A) Worm
(B) Ransomware
(C) Phishing
(D) Trojan
Solution:
- Step 1: Analyze the attack vector: It is an email masquerading as a legitimate entity attempting to steal confidential credentials.
- Step 2: Social engineering attacks via fake emails, websites, or SMS are categorized as Phishing.
- Step 3: Worms and Trojans are types of malware (software code), whereas Phishing is a deceptive communication attack.
- Answer: (C) Phishing.
Example 4
Question: Match the following devices with their respective layer in the OSI model:
- Repeater
- Bridge / Switch
- Router
Solution:
- Step 1: A Repeater/Hub operates at the physical level to amplify raw bit signals → Layer 1 (Physical Layer).
- Step 2: A Bridge/Switch uses MAC addresses to filter frames → Layer 2 (Data Link Layer).
- Step 3: A Router directs packets between different networks based on IP addresses → Layer 3 (Network Layer).
- Answer: Repeater → Physical Layer; Switch → Data Link Layer; Router → Network Layer.
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- OSI Model Layer Sequence (Bottom to Top - Layer 1 to 7):
- Mnemonic: Please Do Not Throw Sausage Pizza Away
- Physical (1) → Data Link (2) → Network (3) → Transport (4) → Session (5) → Presentation (6) → Application (7)
- OSI Model Layer Sequence (Top to Bottom - Layer 7 to 1):
- Mnemonic: All People Seem To Need Data Processing
- Malware Difference in One Word:
- Virus: Needs a Host File + User Action.
- Worm: Self-replicating (Needs no host, no user action).
- Trojan: Deception (Disguised as useful software, does not self-replicate).
- Ransomware: Extortion (Encrypts data, demands money).
- Email Protocol Trick:
- SMTP = Send Mail To People (used to send mail).
- POP = Pull Out / Post office (used to receive mail).
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing MAC Address and IP Address:
- MAC address is physical, permanent (burned into the NIC), and 48 bits (6 bytes).
- IP address is logical, dynamic/changeable, and 32 bits (IPv4) or 128 bits (IPv6).
- Confusing Hub and Switch:
- A Hub broadcasts to every connected device (creates collision issues).
- A Switch sends data only to the targeted device (unicast).
- Classifying a Trojan as a Self-Replicating Program:
- Trojans do not replicate or clone themselves like viruses and worms. They trick the user into installing them.
- Confusing HTTPS with HTTP Port:
- Default HTTP port is 80 (unsecured).
- Default HTTPS port is 443 (secured with SSL/TLS).
- Assuming Firewalls Kill Viruses:
- A firewall blocks unauthorized network connections based on IP/Port rules. It does not scan files to remove viruses already present on a system; that is the job of an Antivirus program.
