How Quantities Combine: Understanding Data (Class 9): Notes और MCQ Practice

Class 9 Mathematics • Class 9

Key Concepts & Formulas

  • Combined Average (Two Groups): Combined Mean = (a × n + b × m) ÷ (n + m)

(यहाँ a, b averages हैं और n, m group sizes हैं)

  • General Weighted Mean: x = (w1 × x1 + w2 × x2 + ... + wn × xn) ÷ (w1 + w2 + ... + wn)
  • Equal Size Rule: Simple average of averages केवल तभी सही होता है जब सभी collections का size बराबर हो (जैसे Jaspreet के cycling days: (a + b + c) ÷ 3)।
  • Mixtures: Mixture concentration = (Quantity of ingredient) ÷ (Total quantity of mixture)
  • Stacked Bar Chart: यह components और उनके overall totals को एक साथ दिखाने के लिए use होता है (पर 0 से शुरू न होने वाले bars को compare करना मुश्किल होता है)।

2 Memory Tricks

  1. "Bhaari ka Palla Bhaari" (Heavy Pulls More): जिस group का weight या quantity ज्यादा होगी, final answer हमेशा उसी value के ज्यादा करीब झुकेगा (midway नहीं रहेगा)।
  2. "Equal tabhi Simple": Groups का size equal दिखे, तभी simple average लेना; size different दिखे, तो direct weighted formula लगाना।

2 Common Board Mistakes

  1. Direct Average of Averages

How Quantities Combine: Understanding Data

1. Chapter in Short

This chapter extends the basic idea of an average (arithmetic mean) to situations where different groups, quantities, or components have different sizes or degrees of importance. In such cases, taking a simple average of averages gives an incorrect result. Instead, we use the weighted mean (or weighted average).

The chapter also covers practical applications of weighted averages—including mixing liquids and alloys, calculating composite scores and customer ratings—and introduces stacked bar/column charts for comparing totals while keeping track of individual parts.

2. Key Concepts Explained Simply

A. Why We Cannot Always Average the Averages

  • Equal group sizes: If Jaspreet cycles 5 days each week for 3 weeks with weekly averages $a$, $b$, and $c$, the overall average is simply:

$(a + b + c) ÷ 3$

This works because each week has the exact same number of days (5 days).

  • Unequal group sizes: In a badminton academy of 8 seniors (average height 165.5 cm) and 3 juniors (average height 149.33 cm), just adding $(165.5 + 149.33) ÷ 2 = 157.415\text{ cm}$ is wrong. It treats 8 seniors and 3 juniors equally. The true average must account for the larger group of seniors pull the result closer to 165.5 cm.

B. The Weighted Average (Weighted Mean)

When groups have different sizes or parts have different importance, we multiply each value by its "weight" (size or importance), add these products, and divide by the total sum of the weights.

C. Mixtures and Concentrations

  • When two mixtures of equal volume are combined, the final concentration is midway between the two.
  • When quantities are unequal, the final concentration is pulled closer to the mixture that has the larger volume or weight. For instance, mixing 500 mL of 10% jaggery lemonade with 200 mL of 20% jaggery lemonade results in a concentration closer to 10% (approximately 13%) because 500 mL is larger than 200 mL.

D. Custom Weights and Ratings

  • Weights as importance: In school assessments or restaurant reviews, different components carry different weightage. For example, if Food, Service, and Ambience are given weights 4 : 3 : 2, Food counts the most in determining the final rating.

E. Cluster-Column Charts vs. Stacked Bar Charts

  • Cluster-column charts: Great for comparing individual categories side-by-side across different groups, but hard to see the total amount at a glance.
  • Stacked bar/column charts: Bars for each category are placed end-to-end. The total length of the bar shows the grand total, while the coloured sections show the contribution of each component.
  • Advantage: Very easy to compare overall totals.
  • Limitation: Except for the first segment at the bottom/base, segments do not start from zero, making it harder to accurately judge and compare individual segment sizes across bars.

3. Important Definitions, Formulas, Facts, and Dates

  • Combined Average for Two Collections:

$\text{Combined Average} = \frac{a \times n + b \times m}{n + m}$

(where $a$ and $b$ are averages, and $n$ and $m$ are the sizes of Collection 1 and Collection 2)

  • Combined Average for Three Collections:

$\text{Combined Average} = \frac{a \times p + b \times q + c \times r}{p + q + r}$

(where $a, b, c$ are averages and $p, q, r$ are the sizes)

  • General Formula for Weighted Mean:

$\text{Weighted Mean } (x) = \frac{w_1 \times x_1 + w_2 \times x_2 + w_3 \times x_3 + \dots + w_n \times x_n}{w_1 + w_2 + w_3 + \dots + w_n}$

(where $x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n$ are the values/concentrations and $w_1, w_2, \dots, w_n$ are the weights/volumes/sizes)

  • Historical Facts:
  • Brahmagupta (c. 628 CE): Formulated the weighted mean in his treatise Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta to calculate the mean depth of an irregularly shaped pit.
  • Śrīdharācārya (c. 750 CE): Used the weighted arithmetic mean in Pāṭīgaṇita to estimate the purity of gold alloys.
  • Varṇa System: Ancient Indian purity measure of gold where 16 varṇa meant 100% pure gold ($k$ varṇa means $k/16$ gold). Today, 16 varṇa = 24 karat.
  • Europe (1700s): The concept of weighted mean gained prominence across Europe by the 1700s.

4. Solved Examples

Example 1: Combined Test Scores of Two Sections

Question: The average test score in Section A (30 students) is 72, and in Section B (25 students) is 76. What is the combined average score of both sections?

Solution:

  • Total score of Section A = $72 \times 30 = 2160$
  • Total score of Section B = $76 \times 25 = 1900$
  • Total number of students = $30 + 25 = 55$

$\text{Combined Average} = \frac{2160 + 1900}{55} = \frac{4060}{55} \approx 73.82$

Example 2: Finding an Unknown Mixture Weight (Brass Alloy)

Question: Batch A of brass weighs 200 kg and is 70% copper. Batch B weighs 120 kg and is 50% copper. Batch C is 45% copper. When all three are combined, the resulting alloy is 55% copper. Find the weight of Batch C.

Solution:

Let the weight of Batch C be $y$ kg.

$\text{Copper in Batch A} = 200 \times 0.70 = 140\text{ kg}$

$\text{Copper in Batch B} = 120 \times 0.50 = 60\text{ kg}$

$\text{Copper in Batch C} = y \times 0.45 = 0.45y\text{ kg}$

$\text{Total weight of alloy} = 200 + 120 + y = 320 + y$

Using the weighted average equation:

$\frac{140 + 60 + 0.45y}{320 + y} = 0.55$

$200 + 0.45y = 0.55 \times (320 + y)$

$200 + 0.45y = 176 + 0.55y$

$200 - 176 = 0.55y - 0.45y$

$24 = 0.10y$

$y = \frac{24}{0.10} = 240\text{ kg}$

Batch C weighs 240 kg.

Example 3: Ancient Gold Purity (Varṇa System)

Question: A goldsmith melts three pieces of gold: 9 units of 12 varṇa, 5 units of 10 varṇa, and 17 units of 11 varṇa. Find the purity in varṇa of the combined gold.

Solution:

  • Weights ($w$): $w_1 = 9$, $w_2 = 5$, $w_3 = 17$
  • Purity values ($x$): $x_1 = 12$, $x_2 = 10$, $x_3 = 11$

$\text{Total purity units} = (9 \times 12) + (5 \times 10) + (17 \times 11)$

$= 108 + 50 + 187 = 345$

$\text{Total weight} = 9 + 5 + 17 = 31$

$\text{Combined purity} = \frac{345}{31} \approx 11.13\text{ varṇa}$

Example 4: Custom Weighted Score Calculation

Question: Rehmat scored 60% in internal tests, 64% in the project, and 73% in the final exam. If the components carry weights in the ratio $3 : 2 : 5$, calculate Rehmat's annual score in Maths.

Solution:

$\text{Weighted Score} = \frac{(60 \times 3) + (64 \times 2) + (73 \times 5)}{3 + 2 + 5}$

$= \frac{180 + 128 + 365}{10} = \frac{673}{10} = 67.3\%$

Rehmat's annual score is 67.3%.

5. Common Mistakes and Quick Revision Points

  • Never simply divide by the number of groups: If Group 1 has 10 items with mean 50, and Group 2 has 90 items with mean 80, the mean is NOT $(50 + 80) ÷ 2 = 65$. The true mean is $[(10 × 50) + (90 × 80)] ÷ 100 = 7700 ÷ 100 = 77$.
  • When DOES simple averaging work? Simple averaging of group averages is valid only when all groups have identical sizes ($p = q = r$).
  • Weights are relative: You can use ratios as weights (e.g., $3 : 2 : 5$) directly without converting them to fractions of 1, as long as you divide by the sum of those ratio terms ($3 + 2 + 5 = 10$).
  • Stacked Bar Charts vs. Base Zero: Do not measure a middle or top block in a stacked chart from 0 on the axis. The length of an individual block is its top mark minus its bottom mark.
