Active and Passive Voice: Notes और MCQ Practice

English Comprehension • SSC CGL, SSC CHSL

आसान भाषा में:

Active Voice में Doer (Subject) पर focus होता है, यानी "काम कौन कर रहा है"। Passive Voice में Action या Receiver (Object) पर focus होता है, यानी "काम किस पर हुआ"। SSC CGL में Voice conversion से direct 3-5 सवाल आते हैं, और सबसे बड़ी बात—यहाँ Narration की तरह कभी Tense change नहीं होता!

Core Rules & Formulas:

Basic Structure: Object + Helping Verb + V3 + by + Subject

  • Simple Present / Past:
  • V1 / do / does → is / am / are + V3
  • V2 / did → was / were + V3
  • Continuous Tense:
  • is/am/are/was/were + V-ing → is/am/are/was/were + being + V3
  • Perfect Tense:
  • has / have / had + V3 → has / have / had + been + V3
  • Modals (can, could, may, must, should):
  • Modal + V1 → Modal + be + V3
  • Note: Future Continuous और तीनों Perfect Continuous tenses का Passive नहीं बनता।

2 Quick Tricks (Option Elimination):

  1. Golden V3 Rule: Passive Voice का मतलब ही है Verb की 3rd form (V3)। अगर options में main verb V3 नहीं है, तो उसे बिना सोचे सीधे eliminate करें।
  2. 'Being' vs 'Been' Trick: Active में Continuous (V-ing) दिखे तो option में being ढूँढिए; Active में Perfect (has/have/had) दिखे तो option में been ढूँढिए। 2 सेकंड में answer मिलेगा!

2 Common Mistakes:

  1. Tense बदलने की भूल: बच्चे Narration (Direct-Indirect) के चक्कर में Present का Past कर देते हैं। Voice में Tense strictly same रहता है!
  2. Intransitive Verbs का Passive बनाना: जिन verbs के पास direct object नहीं होता (जैसे: go, come, sleep, die), उनका Passive Voice नहीं बनाया जा सकता (e.g., "He goes to school" का Passive नहीं बनेगा)।

Active and Passive Voice: Study Notes for SSC CGL

1. Concept

Voice refers to the form of a verb that indicates whether the subject performs the action or receives the action.

  • Active Voice: The subject is the doer of the action. The focus is on the agent.
  • Structure: Subject + Verb + Object
  • Example: The mechanic repaired the car.
  • Passive Voice: The subject is the receiver of the action. The focus shifts to the action or the object.
  • Structure: Object (as new subject) + Helping Verb (Be-form) + Past Participle (V3) + by + Subject (as agent)
  • Example: The car was repaired by the mechanic.

When is Passive Voice Preferred in Exams?

  1. When the doer is unknown, obvious, or unimportant (The thief was arrested).
  2. When the receiver/action is more important than the doer (The bill was passed in parliament).

> Core Principle: Only transitive verbs (verbs that take an object) can be transformed into passive voice. Intransitive verbs like sleep, arrive, die, laugh cannot be converted to passive voice.

2. Important Rules and Facts

General Rule of Transformation

  • Active: Subject + Verb + Object
  • Passive: Object + Helping Verb (form of 'be') + V3 (Past Participle) + Preposition (usually 'by') + Subject

Pronoun Case Changes

  • I → me
  • We → us
  • You → you
  • He → him
  • She → her
  • It → it
  • They → them
  • Who → Whom

Tense-Wise Transformation Rules

Tense — Active Voice Structure — Passive Voice Structure

Simple Present — V1 / V1 + s/es — is / am / are + V3

Present Continuous — is / am / are + V1-ing — is / am / are + being + V3

Present Perfect — has / have + V3 — has / have + been + V3

Simple Past — V2 — was / were + V3

Past Continuous — was / were + V1-ing — was / were + being + V3

Past Perfect — had + V3 — had + been + V3

Simple Future — will / shall + V1 — will / shall + be + V3

Future Perfect — will / shall + have + V3 — will / shall + have + been + V3

Modals (can, may, must, should) — Modal + V1 — Modal + be + V3

> Non-Convertible Tenses: The following 4 tenses generally have no passive voice in standard competitive examinations:

> 1. Present Perfect Continuous

> 2. Past Perfect Continuous

> 3. Future Continuous

> 4. Future Perfect Continuous

Special Sentence Types

A. Imperative Sentences
  • Command / Order: Let + Object + be + V3
  • Example: Shut the door. → Let the door be shut.
  • Advice / Suggestion: Object + should + be + V3
  • Example: Help the poor. → The poor should be helped.
  • Request: You are requested to + V1 + Object
  • Example: Please sit down. → You are requested to sit down.
B. Interrogative Sentences
  • Wh- Questions: Retain the question word at the beginning, invert subject and auxiliary verb.
  • Who wrote this book? → By whom was this book written? (or Who was this book written by?)
  • Yes/No Questions:
  • Did you take the medicine? → Was the medicine taken by you?
C. Verbs with Fixed Prepositions (Instead of 'By')

Certain verbs are followed by specific prepositions instead of 'by' in passive voice:

  • Known to, Addicted to, Related to
  • Surprised at, Shocked at, Astonished at, Alarmed at
  • Pleased with, Satisfied with, Disgusted with, Crowded with
  • Contained in, Interested in, Engulfed in

3. Solved Examples (Exam Style)

Example 1: Interrogative with 'Who'

Question: Who taught you French?

  • Step 1 (Identify Tense & Structure): Simple Past ('taught' = V2). Question form.
  • Step 2 (Change 'Who'): 'Who' transforms to 'By whom'.
  • Step 3 (Select Auxiliary Verb): Simple past takes 'was' or 'were'. Using 'you' as subject requires 'were'.
  • Step 4 (Arrange Structure): By whom + helping verb + subject + V3 + remaining words?
  • Answer: By whom were you taught French? (Alternative: Who were you taught French by?)

Example 2: Continuous Tense

Question: The workers are repairing the bridge.

  • Step 1 (Identify Tense): Present Continuous ('are repairing').
  • Step 2 (Identify Subject and Object): Subject = 'The workers', Object = 'the bridge'.
  • Step 3 (Apply Formula): Object + is/am/are + being + V3 + by + Subject.
  • Step 4 (Form the Sentence): 'The bridge' is singular, so use 'is'. Add 'being' + 'repaired'.
  • Answer: The bridge is being repaired by the workers.

Example 3: Sentence with Fixed Preposition

Question: His sudden demise shocked everyone.

  • Step 1 (Identify Tense): Simple Past ('shocked' = V2).
  • Step 2 (Identify Subject and Object): Subject = 'His sudden demise', Object = 'everyone'.
  • Step 3 (Select Auxiliary & Preposition): 'Everyone' takes singular 'was'. 'Shocked' takes the preposition 'at', not 'by'.
  • Answer: Everyone was shocked at his sudden demise.

Example 4: Imperative with Moral Duty

Question: Respect your elders.

  • Step 1 (Identify Type): Imperative sentence showing advice/moral obligation.
  • Step 2 (Select Formula): Object + should + be + V3.
  • Step 3 (Substitute): Object = 'Your elders', V3 = 'respected'.
  • Answer: Your elders should be respected.

4. Shortcuts and Elimination Tricks for SSC CGL

In SSC CGL Tier-1 and Tier-2, options can be eliminated in seconds without reading the whole sentence:

  1. The Tense Invariance Rule (Tense Never Changes):
  • Unlike Direct/Indirect narration, Voice never changes tense.
  • If the active sentence is in Present, the passive must be in Present.
  • Eliminate any option that changes Present to Past. (e.g., If the active verb is 'writes', eliminate options containing 'wrote' or 'had written').
  1. The Mandatory 'V3' Check:
  • Every passive sentence must contain a V3 (Past Participle).
  • If an option contains V1, V2, or V-ing as the main verb without V3, eliminate it instantly.
  1. The '-ing' → 'being' Match:
  • Continuous tense in Active Voice always requires being + V3 in Passive Voice.
  • If the question has '-ing' and an option lacks 'being', cross it out immediately.
  1. The 'has/have/had' → 'been' Match:
  • Perfect tense in Active Voice always requires been + V3 in Passive Voice.
  • Check for the presence of 'been' to eliminate wrong options instantly.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Confusing Voice with Direct/Indirect Speech:
  • Mistake: Changing Simple Present to Simple Past (e.g., changing 'he plays' to 'he played').
  • Correction: In passive voice, keep the tense identical. 'He plays' becomes 'is played'.
  1. Forgetting 'being' in Continuous Sentences:
  • Mistake: Writing "The room was cleaned" for "She was cleaning the room."
  • Correction: "The room was being cleaned." Missing 'being' changes continuous tense to simple past.
  1. Defaulting to 'by' with Fixed Preposition Verbs:
  • Mistake: "I am known by him."
  • Correction: "I am known to him."
  1. Incorrect Subject-Verb Agreement with the New Subject:
  • Mistake: "He gives apples." → "Apples is given by him."
  • Correction: When the plural object (apples) becomes the subject, the helping verb must match the new plural subject: "Apples are given by him."
