English Comprehension • SSC CGL, SSC CHSL
आसान भाषा में
SSC CGL में Spelling Correction से direct 2 से 3 questions आते हैं। Exam में आपको दिए गए options में से या तो Correctly Spelt word पहचानना होता है या Incorrectly Spelt। ज़्यादातर questions Double Consonants, Silent Letters, और Suffix के rules के around घूमते हैं।
Most Important Rules
- 'I' before 'E', except after 'C' Rule:
- Normal cases में IE आता है: Believe, Relieve, Achieve.
- लेकिन C के ठीक बाद EI आता है: Receive, Deceive, Ceiling.
- Exceptions: Weird, Seize, Leisure.
- Doubling the Consonant (CVC Rule):
- जब किसी short vowel word का अंत Consonant-Vowel-Consonant से हो, तो suffix जोड़ते समय last letter double हो जाता है: Occur → Occurred, Begin → Beginning.
- Drop Silent 'E' Rule:
- अगर suffix Vowel से start हो, तो silent 'e' drop हो जाता है: Hope + ing = Hoping, Guide + ance = Guidance.
- अगर suffix Consonant से start हो, तो 'e' रहता है: Hope + ful = Hopeful.
- Final 'Y' to 'I' Rule:
- Consonant + 'Y' हो तो suffix लगाते वक्त 'Y' बदलकर 'I' बन जाता है: Carry → Carried, Beauty → Beautiful.
2 Quick Tricks
- Rough Sheet Pronounce & Write Trick: Screen पर 4 options देखकर confuse होने के बजाय, word को naturally pronounce करें और बिना options देखे rough paper पर खुद spell करके लिखें।
- Syllable Breakdown (Chunking): बड़े words को छोटे chunks में तोड़ें, जैसे: Ac-com-mo-da-tion (याद रखें: Double C + Double M) और Em-bar-rass-ment (Double R + Double S).
2 Common Mistakes
- Double Consonants का Confusion: Students अक्सर Millennium, Committee, Occurrence, Harassment में single/double letters miss कर देते हैं (Note: Harassment में single 'r' और double 's' होता है).
- Silent Letters को Skip करना: Pneumonia, Gauge, Queue, Subtle जैसे tricky words में pronunciation के चक्कर में silent letters drop कर देना।
Spelling Correction (English Comprehension)
1. Concept
In competitive exams like SSC CGL, Spelling Correction questions test your vocabulary, attention to detail, and understanding of standard English orthography (spelling rules).
Typically, questions appear in two formats:
- Identify the correctly spelled word: Out of four options, only one is spelled correctly.
- Identify the incorrectly spelled word: Out of four options, three are spelled correctly and one contains an error.
English spelling is notoriously irregular due to borrowings from Latin, Greek, French, and Germanic languages. However, mastering a few core phonetic and morphological rules—along with high-frequency exceptions—makes this section highly scoring.
2. Important Rules and Facts
Rule 1: The 'I' before 'E' Rule
- Rule: Use i before e, except after c, or when sounded like a (as in neighbor or weigh).
- i before e:
Believe,Relief,Chief,Thief,Piece - Except after c:
Receive,Deceit,Ceiling,Perceive,Conceit - Sounded as /eɪ/:
Neighbour,Weight,Vein,Sleigh - Key Exceptions:
Weird,Seize,Neither,Foreign,Sovereign,Leisure,Height
Rule 2: Dropping or Retaining the Silent 'E'
- Drop the final 'e' before a suffix beginning with a vowel (-ing, -ed, -able, -ous):
- Hope + ing =
Hoping - Make + er =
Maker - Fame + ous =
Famous - Keep the final 'e' before a suffix beginning with a consonant (-ful, -ment, -ly):
- Hope + ful =
Hopeful - Sincere + ly =
Sincerely - Engage + ment =
Engagement - Key Exceptions:
- Retain 'e' after soft c or g before a or o to keep the soft sound:
Noticeable,Changeable,Courageous. - Exceptions dropping 'e' before consonants:
Truly(true + ly),Ninth(nine + th),Argument(argue + ment),Awful(awe + ful).
Rule 3: Doubling the Final Consonant (The 1-1-1 Rule)
- For a one-syllable word ending in 1 vowel + 1 consonant, double the final consonant before adding a vowel suffix:
- Run + ing =
Running - Stop + ed =
Stopped - For words of two or more syllables, double the consonant only if the stress/accent falls on the last syllable:
- Oc-cur + ed =
Occurred - Pre-fer + ing =
Preferring - But if the stress is on the first syllable, do not double:
- Ben-e-fit + ed =
Benefited - Hap-pen + ing =
Happening - Tra-vel + er =
Traveler(American) /Traveller(British - preferred in SSC)
Rule 4: Words Ending in 'Y'
- If a word ends in a consonant + y, change y to i before any suffix (except -ing):
- Beauty + ful =
Beautiful - Carry + ed =
Carried - Cry + ing =
Crying(retain y to avoid double i) - If a word ends in a vowel + y, simply add the suffix:
- Play + ed =
Played - Employ + er =
Employer
Rule 5: Words Ending in 'C'
- When adding a suffix beginning with e, i, or y to a word ending in c, insert a k to preserve the hard /k/ sound:
- Panic + ed =
Panicked - Picnic + ing =
Picnicking - Traffic + er =
Trafficker
Rule 6: Prefixes and Roots
- When adding prefixes like dis-, mis-, un-, il-, or ir-, the base word spelling never changes:
- Mis + spell =
Misspell(two 's's) - Dis + satisfy =
Dissatisfy(two 's's) - Il + logical =
Illogical(two 'l's) - Ir + relevant =
Irrelevant(two 'r's)
3. Solved Examples (Exam Style)
Example 1 (Identify the Correctly Spelled Word)
Question: Select the correctly spelled word.
- (A) Accomodate
- (B) Acommodate
- (C) Accommodate
- (D) Acomodate
Solution:
- Break down the components and common doubling spots: The word comes from Latin ac- + commodus.
- It requires both a double 'c' and a double 'm'.
- Check options:
- (A) Accomodate (missing single 'm')
- (B) Acommodate (missing single 'c')
- (C) Accommodate (correct: double 'c' and double 'm')
- (D) Acomodate (both single)
Correct Answer: (C) Accommodate
Example 2 (Identify the Incorrectly Spelled Word)
Question: Select the option that has an incorrectly spelled word.
- (A) Millennium
- (B) Questionnaire
- (C) Occurrence
- (D) Embarass
Solution:
- Check (A):
Millennium-> Has double 'l' and double 'n'. Correct. - Check (B):
Questionnaire-> Has double 'n'. Correct. - Check (C):
Occurrence-> Root occur (stress on 2nd syllable) doubles 'r' before -ence. Also has double 'c'. Correct. - Check (D):
Embarass-> The correct spelling requires double 'r' and double 's': Embarrass.
Correct Answer: (D) Embarass (Correct form: Embarrass)
Example 3 (High-Frequency Word with Silent Letters)
Question: Select the correctly spelled word.
- (A) Bureaucracy
- (B) Beurocracy
- (C) Bureaucrasy
- (D) Burocracy
Solution:
- Identify the root: French bureau (desk/office) + Greek -cracy (rule/power).
- French pattern for "eau":
B-U-R-E-A-U. - Suffix is spelled with 'c', not 's':
-cracy. - Combining them gives:
Bureaucracy.
Correct Answer: (A) Bureaucracy
Example 4 (Exceptions to the 'E' Dropping Rule)
Question: Select the incorrectly spelled word.
- (A) Noticeable
- (B) Changeable
- (C) Argument
- (D) Truly
- (Note: Consider a standard 4-option set where one is altered, e.g., Noticable)
Revised Option Set:
- (A) Noticable
- (B) Changeless
- (C) Judgment
- (D) Maintenance
Solution:
- Check (A):
Noticable-> The base word is notice. Since the suffix -able starts with an 'a', dropping the 'e' would make the 'c' sound hard (like "k"). Therefore, keep the 'e': Noticeable. - Check (B):
Changeless-> Consonant suffix; keeps 'e'. Correct. - Check (C):
Judgment-> Both Judgment and Judgement are accepted, with Judgment being widely used in legal/formal English. Correct. - Check (D):
Maintenance-> Derived from maintain, but changes to mainten- + -ance. Correct.
Correct Answer: (A) Noticable (Correct form: Noticeable)
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- The Cover-and-Write Technique:
- Looking at four confusing options simultaneously induces doubt. Cover all options with your hand or rough sheet, pronounce the target word mentally, and write it down quickly on your rough sheet from pure muscle memory. Compare your written word against the choices.
- Syllable Separation (Chunking):
- Break difficult, lengthy words into smaller phonetic chunks:
- Mis-chie-vous (not mis-che-vi-ous)
- Con-sci-en-tious (Con + sci + en + tious)
- Liai-son (Li-ai-son)
- Mnemonic Pairs for Tricky Doubled Letters:
- Embarrass: It is so embarrassing that I go Red with Regret and Sweat with Shame (rr and ss).
- Committee: Needs a team—double m, double t, double e (
co-mm-itt-ee). - Necessary: One Collar and two Sleeves (one c, double s).
- Dessert vs. Desert: You always want more Sweet Stuff (two s's in
Dessert). - Separate: There is a rat in sep-a-rat-e.
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing Pronunciation with Spelling:
- Pronunciation itself does NOT have an "oun": It is
Pronunciation, not Pronounciation. - Colonel is pronounced 'kernel', but spelled
Colonel. - Mixing Suffix Pairs (-ent vs. -ant, -ible vs. -able):
- It is
Independent(not Independant). - It is
Ineligible(not Ineligable). - It is
Indispensable(not Indispensible). - Single vs. Double Letters in Common Root Derivatives:
Fulfill(British standard often accepted in SSC:FulfilorFulfill; however, watch out forFulfillment).Privilege(No 'd'; often misspelled as Priviledge).Gauge(often misspelled as Guage).Vacuum(One 'c', two 'u's; often misspelled as Vaccuum).
