Direct and Indirect Speech: Notes और MCQ Practice

English Comprehension • SSC CGL, SSC CHSL

आसान भाषा में

जब किसी speaker के exact words को quotation marks ("") में लिखते हैं, तो वो Direct Speech कहलाता है। जब उसी बात को बिना quotes के, अपने शब्दों में report करते हैं, तो वो Indirect Speech बन जाता है। SSC CGL में यह scoring topic है, जहाँ बस basic rules follow करने से full marks मिल जाते हैं!

Important Rules (गोल्डन रूल्स)

  1. Reporting Verb Rule: अगर Reporting Verb Present या Future tense में है (says, will say), तो Reported Speech का Tense change नहीं होगा।
  2. Tense Change (अगर Verb Past में हो):
  • Simple Present $\rightarrow$ Simple Past (do $\rightarrow$ did)
  • Present Continuous $\rightarrow$ Past Continuous (is/am/are $\rightarrow$ was/were)
  • Simple Past $\rightarrow$ Past Perfect (went $\rightarrow$ had gone)
  • Past Continuous $\rightarrow$ Past Perfect Continuous
  • Modal verbs: can $\rightarrow$ could, may $\rightarrow$ might, will $\rightarrow$ would
  1. Pronoun Change (SON Formula):
  • 1st Person (I, We) $\rightarrow$ Subject के अनुसार
  • 2nd Person (You) $\rightarrow$ Object के अनुसार
  • 3rd Person (He, She, It, They) $\rightarrow$ No Change
  1. Time & Place Words: today $\rightarrow$ that day, tomorrow $\rightarrow$ the next day, yesterday $\rightarrow$ the previous day, now $\rightarrow$ then, this $\rightarrow$ that.

2 Quick Tricks

  • Option Elimination Trick: Exam में पूरा sentence convert करने के बजाय सिर्फ Helping Verb और Time words (जैसे tomorrow $\rightarrow$ next day) चेक करो; 3 options तुरंत eliminate हो जाते हैं।
  • Universal Truth Exception: अगर sentence में कोई Universal Truth, Scientific Fact या Habitual Action हो, तो Past tense होने पर भी Reported Speech का Tense change नहीं होता।

2 Common Mistakes

  • 'Told to' का Use: said to बदलकर told बनता है, कभी भी told to मत लिखना (Incorrect: He told to me $\rightarrow$ Correct: He told me)।
  • Interrogative Word Order: Indirect questions में sentence Assertive बन जाता है (Incorrect: He asked where was I $\rightarrow$ Correct: He asked where I was)। Question mark (?) भी हट जाता है।

1. Concept

Direct Speech reports the exact words spoken by a person. It is enclosed in quotation marks (" ").

Example: He said, "I am happy."

Indirect (Reported) Speech conveys the meaning of the original statement without using the exact words or quotation marks. It is also known as Reported Speech.

Example: He said that he was happy.

Key Logic: When converting from Direct to Indirect, the perspective shifts from the speaker's point of view to the reporter's point of view. This usually requires changes in:

  1. Tense (Backshifting)
  2. Pronouns (Person)
  3. Tense/Time words (Place and Time)
  4. Sentence Structure (Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative)

2. Important formulas / rules / facts

A. Tense Changes (Backshifting)

If the reporting verb is in the Past Tense (said, told, asked), the tense in the reported clause usually moves one step back.

Direct Speech Tense — Indirect Speech Tense

Simple Present (e.g., I am) — Simple Past (e.g., he was)

Present Continuous (e.g., I am going) — Past Continuous (e.g., he was going)

Present Perfect (e.g., I have eaten) — Past Perfect (e.g., he had eaten)

Simple Past (e.g., I went) — Past Perfect (e.g., he had gone)

Past Continuous (e.g., I was going) — Past Perfect Continuous (e.g., he had been going)

Past Perfect (e.g., I had gone) — No Change (e.g., he had gone)

Future (e.g., I will go) — Future in the Past (e.g., he would go)

Note: If the reporting verb is in the Present Tense (says, tells, asks), the tense in the reported clause does NOT change.

B. Pronoun Changes (Person)

  • 1st Person (I, we, my, us): Changes according to the Subject of the reporting verb.
  • He said, "I am sick." -> He said that he was sick.
  • 2nd Person (you, your, you): Changes according to the Object of the reporting verb.
  • He said to me, "You are late." -> He told me that I was late.
  • 3rd Person (he, she, they, his, her): Usually remains unchanged.
  • He said, "She is here." -> He said that she was there.

C. Time and Place Word Changes

  • Today -> That day
  • Yesterday -> The previous day / The day before
  • Tomorrow -> The next day / The following day
  • Here -> There
  • This -> That
  • Now -> Then
  • Ago -> Before
  • Last week -> The previous week
  • Next week -> The following week

D. Sentence Types

  1. Declarative (Statement): Use conjunction that (often omitted in informal speech, but keep it for exams).
  2. Interrogative (Question):
  • Yes/No Questions: Use if or whether.
  • Wh- Questions (Who, What, Where, etc.): Keep the question word and change the word order to Subject + Verb (declarative order).
  1. Imperative (Command/Request):
  • Positive: Use to + infinitive.
  • Negative: Use not to + infinitive.
  • Reporting Verbs: Use ordered, requested, advised, warned, told instead of said.

3. 3 to 5 solved examples in exam style, with step-by-step solutions

Example 1: Declarative Sentence (Statement)

Direct: She said, "I have finished my work."

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Reporting Verb: 'said' is in Past Tense. So, we must backshift the tense.
  2. Pronoun: 'I' (1st person) changes to 'she' (matching the subject 'She').
  3. Tense: 'have finished' (Present Perfect) changes to 'had finished' (Past Perfect).
  4. Conjunction: Add 'that'.
  5. Result: She said that she had finished her work.

Answer: She said that she had finished her work.

Example 2: Interrogative Sentence (Yes/No Question)

Direct: He asked me, "Are you coming to the party?"

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Reporting Verb: 'asked' is Past Tense. Backshift required.
  2. Conjunction: It is a Yes/No question, so use if or whether.
  3. Pronoun: 'you' (2nd person) changes to 'I' (matching the object 'me').
  4. Tense: 'Are coming' (Present Continuous) changes to 'was coming' (Past Continuous).
  5. Word Order: Remove the auxiliary 'Are' from the front and attach it to the subject. The structure becomes Subject + Verb.
  6. Result: He asked me if I was coming to the party.

Answer: He asked me if I was coming to the party.

Example 3: Imperative Sentence (Command)

Direct: The teacher told the students, "Do your homework carefully."

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Reporting Verb: 'told' is appropriate for commands. Keep it.
  2. Structure: For positive commands, use to + infinitive.
  3. Pronoun: 'your' (2nd person) changes to 'their' (matching the object 'the students').
  4. Result: The teacher told the students to do their homework carefully.

Answer: The teacher told the students to do their homework carefully.

Example 4: Wh- Question

Direct: She asked him, "Where do you live?"

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Reporting Verb: 'asked' is Past Tense. Backshift required.
  2. Conjunction: Keep the question word Where.
  3. Pronoun: 'you' (2nd person) changes to 'he' (matching the object 'him').
  4. Tense: 'do live' (Simple Present) changes to 'lived' (Simple Past).
  5. Word Order: Change from Question Order (Aux + Subject + Verb) to Statement Order (Subject + Verb). Remove 'do'.
  6. Result: She asked him where he lived.

Answer: She asked him where he lived.

Example 5: Exclamatory Sentence

Direct: He said, "What a beautiful day it is!"

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Reporting Verb: Change 'said' to exclaimed or exclaimed with joy.
  2. Structure: Use how or what + adjective/noun + subject + verb.
  3. Pronoun: 'it' (3rd person) remains 'it'.
  4. Tense: 'is' (Simple Present) changes to 'was' (Simple Past).
  5. Result: He exclaimed that it was a beautiful day. (Or: He exclaimed with joy, "What a beautiful day it is!" -> Indirect: He exclaimed that it was a beautiful day.)

Answer: He exclaimed that it was a beautiful day.

4. Shortcuts and tricks

  1. The "One Step Back" Rule: If the reporting verb is past, move the tense one step back in time. If you are unsure, check the table in Section 2.
  2. Pronoun Mapping:
  • Subject -> 1st Person
  • Object -> 2nd Person
  • Others -> 3rd Person (No change)
  1. Question Word Order: In Indirect Speech, questions never start with an auxiliary verb (Do, Does, Did, Are, Is). Always put the Subject before the Verb.
  • Wrong: He asked me where did I go.
  • Right: He asked me where I went.
  1. Imperative Shortcut:
  • Positive Command = To + Verb
  • Negative Command = Not to + Verb
  1. Time Word Swap: Memorize the pairs: Today/That day, Yesterday/The previous day, Tomorrow/The next day, Here/There, This/That.

5. Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Changing Tense with Present Reporting Verb:
  • Wrong: He says that he was happy.
  • Right: He says that he is happy. (Tense stays same if reporting verb is Present).
  1. Keeping Question Word Order:
  • Wrong: She asked what was the matter.
  • Right: She asked what the matter was. (Subject 'the matter' must come before verb 'was').
  1. Using 'That' with Questions:
  • Wrong: He asked that where I live.
  • Right: He asked where I live. (Never use 'that' with interrogative sentences).
  1. Ignoring Pronoun Changes:
  • Wrong: He said to me, "You are my friend." -> He told me that you are my friend.
  • Right: He told me that I was his friend. ('You' becomes 'I' because the object is 'me').
  1. Forgetting 'Had' for Past Perfect:
  • If the direct speech is Simple Past (e.g., "I went"), the indirect speech MUST be Past Perfect (e.g., "he had gone"). Do not leave it as Simple Past.
