Alphabet Series: Notes और MCQ Practice

General Intelligence and Reasoning • RRB NTPC UG

English Alphabets (A to Z) यह logic positional values, gaps, skipping of letters या reverse pairs पर based होता है।

Most Important Rules:

  • Total Letters: 26 (A = 1, B = 2 ... Z = 26).
  • Reverse Position Rule: Left Position + Right Position = 27

(Reverse Position = 27 − Forward Position)

2 Quick Tricks:

E = 5, J = 10, O = 15, T = 20, Y = 25

  1. Opposite Pairs Shortcut (Sum = 27): Opposite letters याद रखने के code words:

AZ (Azad), BY (Boy), CX (Crux), DW (Dew), EV (Even), FU (Fun), GT (GT Road), HS (High School), IR (Indian Railway), JK (Jungle Queen), KP (Kanpur), LO (Love), MN (Man).

2 Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  1. Left vs Right में उलझना: Exam में 'from left' का मतलब A से Z की तरफ और 'from right' का मतलब Z से A की तरफ होता है।

Alphabet Series: Complete Study Notes

1. Concept

An Alphabet Series is a sequence of English letters (single letters, pairs, or groups) arranged according to a specific logical rule.

In competitive exams like RRB NTPC, your goal is to identify this underlying pattern and determine the missing term or the next term in the sequence. Most alphabet questions are simply Number Series questions in disguise—once you convert letters into their numerical positions, solving them becomes straightforward.

2. Important Formulas, Rules, and Facts

  • Standard Forward Positions (A = 1 to Z = 26):
  • A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=10, K=11, L=12, M=13, N=14, O=15, P=16, Q=17, R=18, S=19, T=20, U=21, V=22, W=23, X=24, Y=25, Z=26.
  • Reverse Positions Formula:
  • Reverse Position of a letter = 27 − Forward Position of that letter
  • Example: Reverse position of D = 27 − 4 = 23 (which corresponds to W from the front).
  • Opposite Letter Pairs:
  • Two letters are called "opposite letters" if the sum of their numerical positions equals 27.
  • Examples: A (1) + Z (26) = 27; B (2) + Y (25) = 27; M (13) + N (14) = 27.
  • Circular/Cyclic Rule:
  • The alphabet wraps around in a circle. Moving 1 step forward from Z gives A (26 + 1 = 1 / A). Moving 1 step backward from A gives Z (1 − 1 = 26 / Z).
  • Common Series Types:
  1. Constant addition or subtraction (e.g., +3, +3, +3).
  2. Increasing or decreasing differences (e.g., +2, +3, +4, +5).
  3. Alternating series (two interwoven independent series).
  4. Cluster series (each letter position in a group follows its own sequence).

3. Solved Examples

Example 1: Single Letter Series

Question: Find the next term in the series:

B, E, H, K, N, ?

  • Step 1: Write down the forward position of each letter:

B = 2, E = 5, H = 8, K = 11, N = 14

  • Step 2: Find the difference between consecutive numbers:

5 − 2 = +3

8 − 5 = +3

11 − 8 = +3

14 − 11 = +3

  • Step 3: Apply the rule to find the next value:

Next number = 14 + 3 = 17

  • Step 4: Convert the number back to a letter:

17th letter is Q.

Answer: Q

Example 2: Increasing Difference Series

Question: Find the missing letter:

A, C, F, J, O, ?

  • Step 1: Convert each letter to its position value:

A = 1, C = 3, F = 6, J = 10, O = 15

  • Step 2: Observe the pattern in differences:

1 to 3 = +2

3 to 6 = +3

6 to 10 = +4

10 to 15 = +5

  • Step 3: The difference increases by 1 each time. The next difference must be +6:

Next value = 15 + 6 = 21

  • Step 4: The 21st letter is U.

Answer: U

Example 3: Letter Cluster (3-Letter Groups)

Question: What comes next in the series:

PMT, OOS, NQR, MSQ, ?

  • Step 1: Track the 1st letter of each cluster:

P (16) → O (15) → N (14) → M (13)

Rule: −1 each time. Next letter = 13 − 1 = 12 → L

  • Step 2: Track the 2nd letter of each cluster:

M (13) → O (15) → Q (17) → S (19)

Rule: +2 each time. Next letter = 19 + 2 = 21 → U

  • Step 3: Track the 3rd letter of each cluster:

T (20) → S (19) → R (18) → Q (17)

Rule: −1 each time. Next letter = 17 − 1 = 16 → P

  • Step 4: Combine all three letters: LUP

Answer: LUP

Example 4: Opposite Letter Pair Series

Question: Find the next pair in the series:

AZ, CX, EV, GT, ?

  • Step 1: Check the 1st letters:

A (1) → C (3) → E (5) → G (7)

Rule: +2 each step. Next letter = 7 + 2 = 9 → I

  • Step 2: Check the 2nd letters:

Z (26) → X (24) → V (22) → T (20)

Rule: −2 each step. Next letter = 20 − 2 = 18 → R

(Alternative check: Each pair sums to 27: 9 + 18 = 27, which confirms I and R are opposites).

Answer: IR

4. Shortcuts and Tricks

  1. The EJOTY Rule (Multiples of 5):
  • Memorize these benchmark positions to find any letter quickly:

E = 5, J = 10, O = 15, T = 20, Y = 25

  • Example: To find 'S', think of T (20), so S is one before T = 19.
  1. The CFILORUX Rule (Multiples of 3):
  • C = 3, F = 6, I = 9, L = 12, O = 15, R = 18, U = 21, X = 24
  1. Memory Words for Opposite Pairs (Sum = 27):
  • A-Z (A to Z)
  • B-Y (BoY / BYe)
  • C-X (CruX / Coca-Cola)
  • D-W (DeW / Down)
  • E-V (EVening / LovE)
  • F-U (FUll / For U)
  • G-T (GT Road)
  • H-S (High School)
  • I-R (Indian Railways)
  • J-Q (Jungle Queen / Jack-Queen)
  • K-P (KanPur / Kurta-Pyjama)
  • L-O (LOve / Light On)
  • M-N (MaN / MooN)
  1. Elimination by First Letter:
  • In multi-letter series questions, solve only for the first letter and look at the multiple-choice options. If only one option starts with that letter, select it immediately to save time.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Counting on Fingers: Manual finger-counting wastes critical seconds and frequently causes "off-by-one" errors (confusing the difference with the actual position).
  • Ignoring the Circular Nature: Forgetting that if a rule says +3 and you are at Y (25), the sequence wraps around: 25 + 3 = 28 → 28 − 26 = 2, which is B.
  • Mixing Forward and Reverse Values: Always stick to forward positions first. Convert reverse positions to forward values using 27 − position before solving.
  • Treating Clusters as a Single Word: In groups like BCD, DEG, ..., do not look for dictionary meanings; treat each position independently (1st with 1st, 2nd with 2nd, 3rd with 3rd).
