Number Series: Notes और MCQ Practice
General Intelligence and Reasoning • RRB NTPC UG
Important Rules & Patterns
n² ± aयाn³ ± aके format में होते हैं (जैसे: 2, 9, 28, 65...
2 Quick Tricks
2 Common Mistakes
Number Series
1. Concept
A Number Series is an ordered sequence of numbers that follow a specific mathematical rule or logical pattern. In the RRB NTPC exam, questions typically ask you to:
- Find the missing term (represented by a question mark,
?). - Identify the wrong term in a given sequence.
To solve these questions efficiently, your goal is to discover the underlying mathematical rule connecting consecutive or alternate terms.
2. Important Rules, Patterns, and Facts
- Difference Series (Arithmetic Progression / Tiered Difference):
- Constant Difference: Consecutive numbers increase or decrease by a fixed amount (e.g., +4, +4, +4).
- Variable Difference: The difference itself forms a pattern (e.g., +2, +4, +6, +8).
- Double Difference: If the first difference does not show a pattern, take the difference of the differences.
- Multiplication / Division Series (Geometric Progression):
- Numbers increase rapidly by multiplying a constant or increasing factor (e.g., ×2, ×3, ×4) or decrease by dividing (e.g., ÷2, ÷2).
- Mixed Series (Multiply/Divide and Add/Subtract):
- Follows forms like:
(Term × n) ± m(e.g., ×2 + 1, ×2 + 2, ×2 + 3).
- Square and Cube Based Patterns:
- Direct powers: n², n³
- Offset powers: n² ± 1, n² ± n, n³ ± 1, n³ ± n
- Essential benchmark: Learn squares from 1² to 30² and cubes from 1³ to 15³ by heart.
- Alternating / Interleaved Series:
- A single sequence contains two intertwined series at odd and even positions.
- Fibonacci / Additive Patterns:
- Each term is the sum of the preceding two terms:
Term(n) = Term(n-1) + Term(n-2).
3. Solved Examples
Example 1: Double Difference Pattern
Question: Find the missing number in the series: 4, 11, 25, 46, 74, ?
Solution:
- Step 1: Calculate the first-level difference between adjacent terms:
- 11 − 4 = 7
- 25 − 11 = 14
- 46 − 25 = 21
- 74 − 46 = 28
- Step 2: Look at the pattern in differences:
7, 14, 21, 28. - The differences are multiples of 7 (increasing by 7 each time).
- Step 3: The next difference must be:
28 + 7 = 35. - Step 4: Calculate the missing term:
74 + 35 = 109
Answer: 109
Example 2: Multiplication and Addition Pattern
Question: Find the missing number: 5, 11, 24, 51, 106, ?
Solution:
- Step 1: Observe rate of growth. The numbers are roughly doubling each step.
- Step 2: Check relation between consecutive terms:
- (5 × 2) + 1 = 11
- (11 × 2) + 2 = 24
- (24 × 2) + 3 = 51
- (51 × 2) + 4 = 106
- Step 3: Apply the identified pattern
(× 2 + n)for the next term: - Next step:
(106 × 2) + 5 - 212 + 5 = 217
Answer: 217
Example 3: Cube Pattern with an Offset
Question: Find the missing number: 2, 9, 28, 65, 126, ?
Solution:
- Step 1: Compare terms to standard cubes:
- 1³ = 1 → 1 + 1 = 2
- 2³ = 8 → 8 + 1 = 9
- 3³ = 27 → 27 + 1 = 28
- 4³ = 64 → 64 + 1 = 65
- 5³ = 125 → 125 + 1 = 126
- Step 2: The general rule is
n³ + 1wheren = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... - Step 3: Calculate for
n = 6: - 6³ + 1 = 216 + 1 = 217
Answer: 217
Example 4: Alternating (Two-in-One) Series
Question: Find the missing term: 14, 28, 17, 25, 20, 22, 23, ?
Solution:
- Step 1: Notice the sequence goes up, then down, then up (zig-zag growth) and has many terms. This strongly indicates two interleaved series.
- Step 2: Separate the terms into odd and even positions:
- Series A (odd positions): 14, 17, 20, 23 (Rule: +3 each step)
- Series B (even positions): 28, 25, 22, ? (Rule: −3 each step)
- Step 3: The missing term belongs to Series B:
22 − 3 = 19
Answer: 19
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- Growth Rate Check (The 3-Second Rule):
- Slow, gradual increase/decrease: Test addition or subtraction first.
- Steep, rapid increase: Test multiplication, squares, or cubes.
- Fluctuating / zig-zag values: Split into alternating series immediately.
- Double Difference Method:
- When differences seem random (e.g., 5, 11, 19, 29), calculate the second difference:
11 − 5 = 6,19 − 11 = 8,29 − 19 = 10. The pattern usually becomes obvious.
- Quick Square/Cube Identification:
- If numbers are very close to standard powers (like 26, 63, 124, 215), immediately check
n² ± 1orn³ ± 1instead of taking differences.
- Work Backwards for Large Numbers:
- Finding the relation between large consecutive terms (e.g., 48 to 242) is easier than between small terms (e.g., 2 to 8), because
48 × 5 = 240 (+ 2)limits the possible multipliers.
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confirming with only one pair: Checking
2 to 4and assuming+2or×2without verifying the rule on the subsequent terms. - Ignoring Prime Numbers: Differences or numbers themselves often follow prime sequences (2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17...). Do not confuse 9 or 15 for primes.
- Misidentifying alternating series: Spending too much time trying to find a single complex relation between consecutive terms when two independent series are interwoven.
- Calculation slips in multi-step differences: A single subtraction error in finding step-1 differences ruins the entire tier-2 analysis.
