Data Sufficiency: Notes और MCQ Practice

General Intelligence and Reasoning • RRB NTPC Graduate

Core Rules & Flowchart:

  4. Standard Decision Matrix:
  • केवल 1 से answer आए → Only 1 is sufficient
  • केवल 2 से answer आए → Only 2 is sufficient
  • दोनों मिलाकर answer आए → Both 1 and 2 together

2 Quick Tricks:

Number of Equations = Number of Variables,
  2. Definite Yes/No Rule: अगर सवाल 'Is X > Y?' जैसा Yes/No type है, और Statement से 100% 'NO' भी आ रहा है, तब भी Data Sufficient माना जाएगा!

2 Common Mistakes:

  2. Multiple Answers Trap: अगर किसी statement से दो possible answers निकल रहे हैं (e.g., Value is +4 or -4), तो वह Data Sufficient नहीं है।

Data Sufficiency (General Intelligence and Reasoning)

1. Concept

In Data Sufficiency, a question is followed by two statements (labeled I and II). Your task is not to find the exact numerical or descriptive answer, but to determine whether the given statements contain enough information to answer the question uniquely.

The Standard Decision Framework

Most competitive exams, including RRB NTPC, offer options structured like this:

  • Only I is sufficient: Statement I alone gives a definite answer, but Statement II alone does not.
  • Only II is sufficient: Statement II alone gives a definite answer, but Statement I alone does not.
  • Either I or II is sufficient: Statement I alone gives the answer, AND Statement II alone also gives the answer independently.
  • Neither I nor II is sufficient: Even after combining both statements, we cannot reach a unique answer.
  • Both I and II together are sufficient: Neither statement alone is enough, but combining both yields a unique answer.

2. Important Rules, Facts, and Flow

  1. Do Not Calculate Completely: Stop the moment you know that a unique answer can be found. Calculating the final answer wastes valuable exam time.
  2. The Golden Rule of Independent Testing:
  • First, test Statement I alone. (Completely ignore Statement II).
  • Second, test Statement II alone. (Completely forget Statement I; do not carry forward any assumptions from Statement I).
  • Only combine Statements I and II if both fail independently.
  1. Uniqueness is Mandatory: An answer is sufficient only if it gives one single, unambiguous answer.
  • If a statement leads to two possible answers (e.g., "X is either 20 or 25"), it is not sufficient.
  1. Yes/No Questions: For questions asking "Is A older than B?", a definitive "No" is just as sufficient as a definitive "Yes". If a statement allows you to conclusively say "No", that statement is sufficient.
  2. Never Assume Beyond Common Facts: Do not assume genders based on names (e.g., 'Kiran' or 'Deepak' can be male or female unless specified or gender-specific relations like 'brother' or 'mother' are given).

3. Solved Examples

Example 1: Ranking / Order

Question: Among five friends A, B, C, D, and E, who is the tallest?

Statements:

  • Statement I: B is taller than only C and E.
  • Statement II: A is taller than D but shorter than none.

Step-by-step Solution:

  1. Analyze Statement I alone:
  • B is taller than only C and E. That means B is 3rd from the top, and C and E occupy the 4th and 5th positions.
  • The remaining two people, A and D, must be taller than B (occupying positions 1 and 2).
  • However, we do not know whether A is taller than D, or D is taller than A.
  • Therefore, Statement I alone is not sufficient.
  1. Analyze Statement II alone:
  • "A is taller than D but shorter than none" means A is the tallest person among all five.
  • Statement II alone gives a unique answer (A is the tallest).
  • Therefore, Statement II alone is sufficient.

Answer: Statement II alone is sufficient, while Statement I alone is not sufficient.

Example 2: Blood Relations

Question: How is P related to Q?

Statements:

  • Statement I: M is the brother of P and the only son of Q's father.
  • Statement II: Q is the sister of M.

Step-by-step Solution:

  1. Analyze Statement I alone:
  • M is the brother of P.
  • M is the only son of Q's father. This implies Q's father has only one male child (M). Any other child must be female.
  • Since P is a sibling of M and M is the only son, P must be a female (daughter).
  • Since M is also the brother of Q (both share the same father), P, M, and Q are siblings.
  • Because P is female, P is the sister of Q.
  • Therefore, Statement I alone is sufficient.
  1. Analyze Statement II alone:
  • Q is the sister of M. We have zero information about P.
  • Therefore, Statement II alone is not sufficient.

Answer: Statement I alone is sufficient, while Statement II alone is not sufficient.

Example 3: Directions and Distance

Question: In which direction is Point X with respect to Point Y?

Statements:

  • Statement I: Point X is 5 km North of Point Z. Point W is 5 km East of Point Z.
  • Statement II: Point Y is 5 km South of Point W.

Step-by-step Solution:

  1. Analyze Statement I alone:
  • Contains X, Z, and W. Point Y is not mentioned at all.
  • Statement I alone is not sufficient.
  1. Analyze Statement II alone:
  • Contains Y and W. Point X is not mentioned at all.
  • Statement II alone is not sufficient.
  1. Combine Statements I and II:
  • From I: Z is at the center. X is 5 km North of Z. W is 5 km East of Z.
  • From II: Y is 5 km South of W.
  • Coordinates relative to Z (0, 0):
  • Z = (0, 0)
  • X = (0, 5)
  • W = (5, 0)
  • Y = (5, -5) [since Y is 5 km South of W]
  • Vector from Y to X: X is to the North-West of Y.
  • We get a unique, definite direction.

Answer: Both Statements I and II together are necessary and sufficient.

Example 4: Days and Dates

Question: On which day of the week did Rahul celebrate his birthday?

Statements:

  • Statement I: Rahul's sister remembers that his birthday was after Tuesday but before Saturday.
  • Statement II: Rahul's mother remembers that his birthday was after Wednesday but before Sunday.

Step-by-step Solution:

  1. Analyze Statement I alone:
  • Birthday can be on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday (3 possibilities).
  • Not sufficient.
  1. Analyze Statement II alone:
  • Birthday can be on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday (3 possibilities).
  • Not sufficient.
  1. Combine Statements I and II:
  • Common days between {Wednesday, Thursday, Friday} and {Thursday, Friday, Saturday} are Thursday and Friday.
  • Since there are still two possibilities, we do not get a single, unique day.
  • Both statements together are still not sufficient.

Answer: Neither Statement I nor Statement II is sufficient.

4. Shortcuts and Elimination Strategy

Use this systematic 3-step elimination technique to save time:

```text
Step 1: Check Statement I
├── Sufficient --> Options narrowed to: "Only I" or "Either I or II"
└── Insufficient --> Options narrowed to: "Only II", "Both Together", or "Neither"
Step 2: Check Statement II
├── If Step 1 was SUFFICIENT:
│ ├── Statement II is Sufficient --> Answer is EITHER
│ └── Statement II is Insufficient --> Answer is ONLY I
└── If Step 1 was INSUFFICIENT:
├── Statement II is Sufficient --> Answer is ONLY II
└── Statement II is Insufficient --> Proceed to Step 3
Step 3: Combine I and II (Only if both failed alone)
├── Together give a unique answer --> Answer is BOTH TOGETHER
└── Still ambiguous or multiple values --> Answer is NEITHER
```

  • Never check both combined first: Jumping straight to combining them leads to selecting "Both together" even when one statement was independently sufficient.
  • The Variable vs. Equation rule: If you need to find the value of two variables (x and y), you generally need two independent linear equations. If Statement I gives one and Statement II gives another, they will usually be sufficient together.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Data Leakage (Carryover Error):
  • Testing Statement II with data already read from Statement I. Treat Statement II as a brand-new question until you explicitly decide to combine them.
  1. Confusing 'Either' with 'Both':
  • Either: I alone works, OR II alone works independently.
  • Both: Neither works alone; they must team up to provide the answer.
  1. Assuming Real-World Facts for Variables:
  • Assuming numbers are positive integers. In mathematical reasoning, variables can be negative, zero, or fractions unless specified.
  1. Solving to the Very End:
  • Finding the exact name or exact coordinate is not required. As soon as you realize "X can only be at Position 4", mark it as sufficient and move on.
