Maps: Notes और MCQ Practice

General Intelligence and Reasoning • RRB NTPC Graduate

Important Rules & Formulas:

  • Standard Map Orientation: Top = North, Bottom = South, Right = East, Left = West.
  • Map Scale Formula: Actual Distance = Map Distance × Scale Factor

(जैसे: अगर Scale 1 cm = 50 km है, तो 3 cm = 3 × 50 = 150 km)

  • Shortest Distance (Displacement):

Shortest Distance = √(Horizontal Distance² + Vertical Distance²)

  • Turns on Map: Right Turn = 90° Clockwise, Left Turn = 90° Anticlockwise.

2 Quick Tricks:

  1. Clockwise NESW Rule: दिमाग में N-E-S-W का clockwise circle याद रखें। अगर आप North में हैं और Right turn लेते हैं तो सीधे East, East से Right turn पर South!
  2. Pythagorean Triplets का Use: Right-angled triangle बनते ही direct triplets use करो—(3, 4, 5), (6, 8, 10), (5, 12, 13)। Square root निकालने में time waste मत करो।

2 Common Mistakes:

  1. Reference Point Confusion: सवाल पूछता है "Direction of Point B with respect to Point A", लेकिन students गलती से B से A की direction mark कर देते हैं। हमेशा 'From' या 'With respect to' वाले point पर compass बनाएं।
  2. Scale Unit Mismatch: Map Distance cm में और Options km या meters में होते हैं। Unit conversions (1 km = 1,000 m = 1,00,000 cm) check करना न भूलें।

Maps and Route Reasoning

1. Concept

In the General Intelligence and Reasoning section of competitive exams like RRB NTPC, "Maps" questions test your spatial orientation, route tracing, map scaling, and directional sense.

A map is a two-dimensional visual representation of an area. In reasoning problems, maps are usually presented either as:

  • Directional Grids: Tracing movement across cardinal directions.
  • Scaled Maps: Calculating real-world ground distances using map scales (e.g., 1 cm on the map = 5 km on the ground).
  • Network/Layout Maps: Determining the relative positions of landmarks, buildings, or intersections.

The Standard Map Orientation

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all maps follow the universal orientation convention:

  • Top: North (N)
  • Bottom: South (S)
  • Right: East (E)
  • Left: West (W)

2. Important Formulas, Rules, and Facts

1. The Eight Cardinal and Intercardinal Directions

  • Major Directions: North (N), South (S), East (E), West (W).
  • Sub-Directions:
  • Between North and East: North-East (NE)
  • Between South and East: South-East (SE)
  • Between South and West: South-West (SW)
  • Between North and West: North-West (NW)
  • The angle between any two adjacent cardinal directions (e.g., North and East) is 90°.
  • The angle between a cardinal and its adjacent sub-direction (e.g., North and North-East) is 45°.

2. Left and Right Turn Rules on a Map

  • Facing North: Right = East, Left = West
  • Facing South: Right = West, Left = East
  • Facing East: Right = South, Left = North
  • Facing West: Right = North, Left = South

3. Map Scale Formula

  • Scale Ratio: Map Distance : Actual Distance
  • Actual Distance = Map Distance × Scale Factor
  • Map Distance = Actual Distance ÷ Scale Factor

4. Shortest Distance (Displacement) Formula

When movements form a right-angled triangle, use the Pythagoras Theorem:

  • (Shortest Distance)² = (Base)² + (Perpendicular)²
  • Shortest Distance = √((Base)² + (Perpendicular)²)

5. Coordinate Representation Rule

For quick calculation on a Cartesian plane:

  • East = +X axis
  • West = −X axis
  • North = +Y axis
  • South = −Y axis

3. Solved Examples

Example 1: Map Scale & Shortest Distance

Problem: On a city planning map, a scale of 1 cm = 6 km is used. An engineer measures a straight road from Point A to Point B as 4 cm East, and from Point B to Point C as 3 cm North. Find:

  1. The total actual road distance travelled from A to C.
  2. The shortest straight-line actual distance between Point A and Point C.

Solution:

  • Step 1: Calculate map distances.
  • Distance AB on map = 4 cm
  • Distance BC on map = 3 cm
  • Total map distance = 4 cm + 3 cm = 7 cm
  • Step 2: Calculate total actual distance travelled.
  • Actual Distance = Total map distance × Scale factor
  • Total Actual Distance = 7 × 6 = 42 km
  • Step 3: Calculate the shortest map distance between A and C.
  • Triangle ABC forms a right-angled triangle where AB = 4 cm (East) and BC = 3 cm (North).
  • (AC)² = (AB)² + (BC)²
  • (AC)² = 4² + 3² = 16 + 9 = 25
  • AC = √25 = 5 cm
  • Step 4: Convert shortest map distance to actual distance.
  • Shortest Actual Distance = 5 cm × 6 km/cm = 30 km

Answer: Total actual distance is 42 km; Shortest actual distance is 30 km.

Example 2: Relative Positions on a Schematic Map

Problem: In an office layout map:

  • Building Q is 40 m to the South of Building P.
  • Building R is 30 m to the East of Building Q.
  • Building S is 40 m to the North of Building R.

In which direction and at what distance is Building S with respect to Building P?

Solution:

  • Step 1: Plot the positions using coordinates (taking P as origin 0, 0).
  • Point P = (0, 0)
  • Building Q is 40 m South of P: Q = (0, −40)
  • Building R is 30 m East of Q: R = (0 + 30, −40) = (30, −40)
  • Building S is 40 m North of R: S = (30, −40 + 40) = (30, 0)
  • Step 2: Determine position of S relative to P.
  • P is at (0, 0) and S is at (30, 0).
  • S has the same Y-coordinate as P, but its X-coordinate is +30.
  • A positive X displacement corresponds to East.

Answer: Building S is 30 m to the East of Building P.

Example 3: Route Tracing with Multiple Turns

Problem: A delivery agent consulting a GPS map starts at Hub O. He travels 10 km North to Point A, turns 90° clockwise and travels 14 km to Point B, turns 90° clockwise and travels 6 km to Point C, then turns right and travels 6 km to Point D. What is the shortest distance between Hub O and Point D, and in which direction is D from O?

Solution:

  • Step 1: Track each segment step-by-step.
  • Start: O = (0, 0)
  • 10 km North: A = (0, 10)
  • Turn 90° clockwise (faces East), drives 14 km: B = (14, 10)
  • Turn 90° clockwise (faces South), drives 6 km: C = (14, 10 − 6) = (14, 4)
  • Turn right while facing South (faces West), drives 6 km: D = (14 − 6, 4) = (8, 4)
  • Step 2: Find the distance from O(0, 0) to D(8, 4).
  • Horizontal distance (Base) = 8 − 0 = 8 km
  • Vertical distance (Perpendicular) = 4 − 0 = 4 km
  • Shortest distance = √(8² + 4²) = √(64 + 16) = √80 = √(16 × 5) = 4√5 km (approx. 8.94 km)
  • Step 3: Determine direction of D from O.
  • X is positive (+8, East), Y is positive (+4, North).

Answer: Distance is 4√5 km (or √80 km); Direction is North-East.

Example 4: Interpreting Scaled Grids

Problem: On a square grid map, each grid unit equals 2.5 km. Point M is located at grid coordinate (2, 3) and Point N is located at grid coordinate (6, 6). What is the straight-line ground distance between M and N?

Solution:

  • Step 1: Calculate grid unit differences.
  • Horizontal difference = 6 − 2 = 4 grid units
  • Vertical difference = 6 − 3 = 3 grid units
  • Step 2: Calculate straight-line distance in grid units.
  • Grid Distance = √(4² + 3²) = √(16 + 9) = √25 = 5 grid units
  • Step 3: Convert grid units to actual distance.
  • Actual Distance = 5 × 2.5 km = 12.5 km

Answer: 12.5 km.

4. Shortcuts and Tricks

  1. The NESW Clockwise Loop:
  • Write the sequence: N → E → S → W → N.
  • Moving right in this sequence equals a 90° right turn (clockwise).
  • Moving left in this sequence equals a 90° left turn (counter-clockwise).
  1. Common Pythagorean Triplets (Save Calculation Time):

Instead of calculating squares and square roots, memorize these standard pairs:

  • (3, 4, 5) and multiples: (6, 8, 10), (9, 12, 15), (12, 16, 20)
  • (5, 12, 13)
  • (8, 15, 17)
  • (7, 24, 25)
  1. Coordinate Method for Rapid Cancellation:
  • Net North-South = (Total North distance) − (Total South distance)
  • Net East-West = (Total East distance) − (Total West distance)
  • If Net North-South is positive, you are North; if negative, South.
  • If Net East-West is positive, you are East; if negative, West.
  • Shortest Distance = √((Net North-South)² + (Net East-West)²)
  1. Scale Calculations:
  • Apply the scale factor at the very end of your calculation rather than at every intermediate turn. This saves multiplication steps and reduces calculation errors.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing "Facing Direction" with "Direction from Starting Point":
  • Facing Direction: Which way the person's eyes/vehicle is pointing at the end.
  • Direction from Origin: The vector pointing from the start position to the end position.
  • Always re-read the exact question prompt before selecting the option.
  • Inverting Left and Right when Facing South or West:
  • When facing South, your Right is West (map left) and your Left is East (map right). A common error is applying your own body's right hand directly to the page without rotating your perspective.
  • Mixing Up Total Distance and Shortest Distance:
  • Total Distance = Sum of all individual lengths traveled.
  • Shortest Distance = Straight-line Euclidean distance between initial and final points.
  • Scale Unit Discrepancies:
  • Always check whether map units are given in centimeters (cm) or millimeters (mm) and whether ground units are in meters (m) or kilometers (km). Convert units carefully before final answer selection.
