Blood Relations: Notes और MCQ Practice
General Intelligence and Reasoning • SSC CGL, RRB NTPC Graduate, RRB Paramedical, SSC CHSL
Important Rules / Formulas
- Same generation = same level (brother, sister, cousin).
- Direct line = parent ↔ child ↔ grand‑child (use × for generations).
- Marriage adds in‑law tag (e.g., mother‑in‑law = spouse’s mother).
- Gender rule: Male → uncle, Female → aunt; sibling’s child → nephew/niece.
Quick Tricks
- 3‑step rule – Identify (a) generation, (b) line (vertical/horizontal), (c) gender → combine to get relation.
- Mirror method – Write the given person on left, mirror the relation word on right; if it’s father’s sister → mirror gives 'paternal aunt'.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing maternal vs paternal side – always check mother’s side for 'maternal' relations.
- Ignoring in‑law suffix – 'brother's wife' is sister‑in‑law, not sister.
1. Concept
Blood relations refer to the familial connections between people based on lineage (parents, children, siblings, grandparents, etc.). In reasoning questions, you are given a set of statements about who is related to whom, and you must deduce the exact relationship between two persons or arrange a family tree.
2. Important formulas / rules / facts
- Direct relations: Father, Mother, Son, Daughter, Brother, Sister, Grandfather, Grandmother, Grandson, Granddaughter.
- Sibling rule: Two persons are siblings if they share at least one common parent.
- Grand‑relation rule: Child of a child = Grand‑relation (e.g., son of son = Grandson).
- In‑law rule: Relation through marriage (e.g., Husband’s mother = Mother‑in‑law).
- Gender identification: Words like brother, son, grandson denote male; sister, daughter, granddaughter denote female.
- Generation count: Each step up or down a generation adds/subtracts 1. Example: Father = +1 generation, Son = –1 generation.
- Circular reference: If A is B’s X and B is A’s Y, the two statements must be consistent (e.g., if A is B’s mother, then B is A’s son/daughter).
3. Solved Examples
Example 1
> A is the son of B. B is the mother of C. C is the brother of D. Who is D to A?
Solution
- A is B’s son → B is A’s mother.
- B is mother of C → C is A’s sibling (since they share B).
- C is brother of D → D is sister/brother of C, i.e., D is also sibling of A.
- Therefore, D is brother/sister of A (the exact gender is not given, so answer: Sibling).
Example 2
> P is the father of Q. R is the son of Q. S is the mother of P. How is S related to R?
Solution
- P is father of Q → Q is child of P.
- R is son of Q → R is grand‑child of P.
- S is mother of P → S is grandmother of Q and great‑grandmother of R? Wait, check: S is mother of P, so S is grandmother of Q (P’s child) and great‑grandmother of R (child of Q). Hence, S is great‑grandmother of R.
Example 3
> X is the sister of Y. Y is the son of Z. Z is the brother of W. W is the father of V. What is the relation of V to X?
Solution
- X and Y are siblings.
- Y is son of Z → Z is parent of Y (and X).
- Z is brother of W → W is uncle of Y and X.
- W is father of V → V is child of W.
- Since W is uncle of X, V (child of uncle) is cousin of X.
Example 4
> A is married to B. B’s sister is C. C is the mother of D. How is D related to A?
Solution
- B’s sister = C → C is A’s sister‑in‑law.
- C is mother of D → D is child of A’s sister‑in‑law.
- Therefore, D is nephew/niece of A (gender not specified).
Example 5
> M is the father of N. N’s wife is O. O’s brother is P. P is the son of Q. How is Q related to M?
Solution
- M → father of N.
- N’s wife = O (so O is daughter‑in‑law of M).
- O’s brother = P → P is brother‑in‑law of N and son of Q.
- Since P is son of Q, Q is parent of P.
- P is brother of O, both are children of Q, so Q is father/mother of O.
- O is daughter‑in‑law of M, therefore Q is father/mother‑in‑law of M’s son N → Q is father/mother‑in‑law of M.
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- Assign a reference point: Choose one person (often the one asked about) as the base and mark generations as +1 (up) or –1 (down).
- Use symbols: M↑ for mother, F↑ for father, S↓ for son, D↓ for daughter, B↔ for brother, S↔ for sister.
- Create a mini‑tree on paper quickly: write the name, draw a line up for parents, down for children.
- Eliminate impossible genders: If a statement says “brother”, the person must be male; discard female possibilities.
- In‑law chain: Remember that “X’s mother‑in‑law” = mother of X’s spouse.
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing generation direction (mixing up who is above or below).
- Ignoring gender clues given by words like brother, sister, son, daughter.
- Assuming “uncle” always means paternal uncle; it can be maternal as well – focus on the relationship, not the side.
- Over‑looking in‑law relations; treat them separately from blood relations.
- Forgetting that siblings share both parents unless only one parent is mentioned.
