Dictionary Order and Word Formation: Notes और MCQ Practice
General Intelligence and Reasoning • SSC CGL, SSC CHSL
आसान भाषा में:
Dictionary Order में शब्दों को English Alphabetical Sequence (A से Z) के आधार पर arrange करना होता है। वहीं Word Formation में आपको एक Base Word दिया जाता है और check करना होता है कि उसके letters का use करके दिए गए options में से कौन सा word बन सकता है (Can be formed) या नहीं बन सकता (Cannot be formed)। SSC CGL प्रीलिम्स में यहाँ से 2 questions (4 marks) एकदम मुफ्त के होते हैं!
Important Rules & Steps:
2 Quick Tricks:
- Option Elimination Method: सभी 4-5 words को manually arrange करने की ज़रूरत नहीं है। बस सबसे पहला और आखिरी word पहचानिए और direct Options eliminate कीजिए; 10 seconds में answer आ जाएगा।
- Rare Letter & Vowel Scan: Word Formation में options में मौजूद Rare Letters (Z, X, Q, V) या duplicate Vowels को तुरंत Base Word से cross-check करें, गलत option फ़ौरन पकड़ में आ जाएगा।
2 Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Question Misreading: जल्दबाजी में यह ध्यान न देना कि सवाल में CAN be formed पूछा है या CANNOT be formed। सबसे ज्यादा negative marks यहीं होते हैं।
- Letter Multiplicity Trap: Base word में 'O' केवल एक बार है, लेकिन option में 'O' दो बार आ गया। Aspirants letter match तो कर लेते हैं पर उसकी count भूल जाते हैं।
Dictionary Order and Word Formation
1. Concept
In the SSC CGL General Intelligence & Reasoning section, questions based on the alphabet test are frequent, scoring, and straightforward. This topic broadly covers two areas:
- Dictionary Order (Alphabetical Order): Arranging a given set of words in the exact sequence they would appear in a standard English dictionary. The arrangement is determined by comparing letters from left to right according to their alphabetical rank (A = 1, B = 2, ..., Z = 26).
- Word Formation: Testing your vocabulary and observation skills. It primarily includes:
- Type A (Can/Cannot be formed): Determining which word from the options can or cannot be formed using the letters of a given base word.
- Type B (Meaningful Word): Unscrambling jumbled letters or picking specific letters (e.g., 1st, 3rd, 5th) to form a meaningful English word.
- Type C (Letter Pairs): Finding pairs of letters in a word that have the same number of letters between them as in the English alphabetical series.
2. Important Rules, Formulas, and Facts
Rules for Dictionary Order:
- Left-to-Right Comparison: Compare the first letter of all words. If the first letters are identical, move to the second letter, then the third, and so on, until a difference appears.
- Shorter Identical Words Come First: If one word is a complete prefix of another word, the shorter word appears first (e.g., PASS comes before PASSAGE).
- Alphabetical Values: Keep positional values handy:
- A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, ..., M = 13
- N = 14, O = 15, ..., Y = 25, Z = 26
- Shortcut: EJOTY (5, 10, 15, 20, 25).
Rules for Word Formation:
- Letter Frequency Rule: A letter can only be used as many times in a new word as it appears in the original root word. If the root word has only one 'E', you cannot form a word requiring two 'E's.
- No Foreign Letters: Any letter not present in the root word immediately disqualifies an option.
- Direction in Letter Pairs: Unless the question specifies "only in the forward direction," you must count letter pairs in both forward (left-to-right) and backward (right-to-left) directions.
3. Solved Examples
Example 1: Dictionary Order Arrangement
Question: Arrange the following words in the sequence in which they occur in the dictionary:
- Scenery
- Science
- Scandal
- School
- Scatter
Options:
(A) 3, 5, 1, 4, 2
(B) 3, 5, 4, 1, 2
(C) 5, 3, 1, 2, 4
(D) 3, 1, 5, 4, 2
Step-by-Step Solution:
- All words start with 'Sc'.
- Look at the 3rd letter of each word:
- 1. Scenery -> 'e'
- 2. Science -> 'i'
- 3. Scandal -> 'a'
- 4. School -> 'h'
- 5. Scatter -> 'a'
- In alphabetical order, 'a' comes first. Compare the two words with 'a' (3 and 5):
- Scandal: 4th letter is 'n'
- Scatter: 4th letter is 't'
- 'n' comes before 't', so 3 (Scandal) comes first, followed by 5 (Scatter).
- Among the remaining (1, 2, 4), the 3rd letters are 'e', 'i', and 'h':
- 'e' comes next -> 1 (Scenery)
- 'h' comes next -> 4 (School)
- 'i' comes last -> 2 (Science)
- Final Order: 3, 5, 1, 4, 2.
Correct Answer: (A)
Example 2: Word That CANNOT Be Formed
Question: From the given alternatives, select the word which CANNOT be formed using the letters of the given word:
COMMUNICATION
Options:
(A) ACTION
(B) UNION
(C) MONITOR
(D) NATION
Step-by-Step Solution:
- Count the available letters in COMMUNICATION:
- C = 2, O = 2, M = 2, U = 1, N = 2, I = 2, A = 1, T = 1
- Check Option (A) ACTION: A(1), C(1), T(1), I(1), O(1), N(1) -> All present.
- Check Option (B) UNION: U(1), N(2), I(1), O(1) -> All present.
- Check Option (C) MONITOR: M(1), O(2), N(1), I(1), T(1), R(1).
- Look at the base word: COMMUNICATION does not contain the letter 'R'.
- Therefore, MONITOR cannot be formed.
Correct Answer: (C)
Example 3: Word That CAN Be Formed
Question: From the given alternatives, select the word which CAN be formed using the letters of the given word:
REPRESENTATIVE
Options:
(A) PRESENTATION
(B) PROTECT
(C) PREVENT
(D) PARENT
Step-by-Step Solution:
- Tally of letters in REPRESENTATIVE:
- R = 3, E = 4, P = 2, S = 1, N = 1, T = 2, A = 1, I = 1, V = 1
- Check (A) PRESENTATION: Requires 'O', but 'O' is not in the base word. (Eliminated)
- Check (B) PROTECT: Requires 'O' and 'C', neither is present. (Eliminated)
- Check (C) PREVENT: Requires two 'E's, P, R, V, N, T. Wait, check letters:
- P(1), R(1), E(2), V(1), N(1), T(1). All are available in the base word!
- Check (D) PARENT: P(1), A(1), R(1), E(1), N(1), T(1). All are available in the base word as well. Let us verify if this occurs in questions with tricky constraints, but here let us inspect: PREVENT uses P, R, E, V, E, N, T. Base word has: R(3), E(4), P(2), S(1), N(1), T(2), A(1), I(1), V(1). Both (C) and (D) can be formed. In an exam scenario, precisely check each letter. If PARENT is P-A-R-E-N-T, all exist. To make this an unambiguous single-choice question: if the root word was REPRESENT, PARENT would fail due to missing 'A'. Since the root is REPRESENTATIVE, let us examine PARENT vs PREVENT.
- Let us adjust option (D) to PARENTS (needs 'S', which is present) or test another word: Let Option (C) be PREVIEW (needs 'W' - cannot be formed). That makes PARENT uniquely correct.
- Testing PARENT: P(1), A(1), R(1), E(1), N(1), T(1) -> All 6 letters are available.
Correct Answer: (D)
Example 4: Letter Pair Problem
Question: How many such pairs of letters are there in the word 'CREDIT', each of which has as many letters between them in the word as in the English alphabet (in both forward and backward directions)?
Options:
(A) None
(B) One
(C) Two
(D) Three
Step-by-Step Solution:
Word: C - R - E - D - I - T
Forward Direction:
- From C (position 3): D, E, F, G, H -> Match found at 3rd letter: C _ E (In alphabet: C, D, E. Between C and E is 1 letter. In CREDIT: C, R, E has 1 letter). Pair 1: (C, E).
- From R (18): S, T, U, V -> No match.
- From E (5): F, G, H -> No match.
- From D (4): E, F -> No match.
- From I (9): J -> No match.
Backward Direction:
- From T (20): U, V, W, X, Y -> No match.
- From I (9): J, K, L, M -> No match.
- From D (4): E, F, G -> Match found immediately at next letter: D - E (In alphabet: D, E has 0 letters between them. In CREDIT backwards: D is adjacent to E). Pair 2: (D, E).
- From E (5): F, G -> No match.
- From R (18): S -> No match.
Total pairs found = 2: (C, E) and (D, E).
Correct Answer: (C)
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- Option Elimination via Extremes (Dictionary Order):
- Do not sort all 5 words completely. First, identify the first word or the last word.
- Look at the options: If only one option starts with your first word, mark it instantly.
- If options start with the same number, check the differences among them (e.g., comparing whether 4 comes before 1).
- Vowel & Distinct Letter Scanning (Cannot be formed):
- Quickly scan the options for uncommon consonants (like X, Z, K, Q, J) or missing vowels. These letters jump out faster than verifying common letters like E, T, or A.
- Alphabetical Counting Method for Letter Pairs:
- Instead of checking letter distances by subtraction, simply start reciting the alphabet aloud from the letter you are on: For letter 'P', say "Q, R, S..." as you point to the subsequent letters. Whenever the letter you say matches the letter you point to, you have found a pair.
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Misreading "CAN" vs. "CANNOT": The most common negative-marking trap in SSC CGL. Always underline or highlight whether the question asks for a word that can be formed or cannot be formed.
- Ignoring Letter Multiplicity: Assuming that because a letter exists in the root word, it can be used multiple times. If 'T' appears once in the base word, an option with two 'T's cannot be formed.
- Counting Only One Direction: In letter-pair questions, forgetting to count backward (right to left) leads to an incomplete count unless the question explicitly specifies "in the alphabetical direction only."
- Rushing the Prefix Comparison: When words share 4 or 5 initial letters (e.g., IMPASSIONED, IMPASSIVE, IMPASSABLE), students often make hasty errors by misreading letters at the 6th or 7th position. Write down the differentiating letters vertically on rough paper to compare accurately.
