आसान भाषा में
Number और Letter Series में हमें दिए गये क्रम (sequence) में छुपा pattern पहचानना होता है – चाहे वह arithmetic, geometric, alternating, या alphanumeric हो।
Important Formulas / Rules
- Common difference (d) = a2 − a1
- Common ratio (r) = a2 ÷ a1
- Nth term of AP = a1 + (n‑1)×d
- Nth term of GP = a1 × r^(n‑1)
- Letter‑to‑Number = Position of letter (A=1, B=2 … Z=26)
- Number‑to‑Letter = Reverse of above
Quick Tricks
Common Mistakes
1. Concept
A series is a list of numbers or letters arranged in a particular order. In a Number Series each term is derived from the previous one(s) by applying a consistent rule (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, alternating patterns, etc.). In a Letter Series the same idea is used but with alphabets (A‑Z) where positions 1‑26 are considered.
2. Important formulas / rules / facts
- Position of a letter: A=1, B=2, …, Z=26.
- To move forward k steps in a letter series: New letter = (Current position + k) mod 26 (use 26 instead of 0).
- To move backward k steps: New letter = (Current position – k) mod 26.
- Common operations in number series:
- Arithmetic progression (AP): Next = Previous + d.
- Geometric progression (GP): Next = Previous × r.
- Alternating operations: e.g., +2, ×3, +2, ×3 …
- Square / cube patterns: n², n³, (n+1)², etc.
- Difference of differences: If first differences are not constant, check second differences.
- Digit‑sum / reverse: Sometimes the next term is obtained by adding the sum of digits of the current term.
- For mixed series, write down the observed pattern in a separate line (e.g., “+3, ×2, +3, ×2 …”).
3. Solved examples (exam style)
Example 1 (Number Series – simple AP)
Series: 7, 13, 19, 25, …
Find the 6th term.
Solution:
- Observe the difference: 13‑7 = 6, 19‑13 = 6, 25‑19 = 6 → common difference d = 6.
- nth term of AP: aₙ = a₁ + (n‑1)·d.
- a₆ = 7 + (6‑1)·6 = 7 + 30 = 37.
Example 2 (Number Series – alternating +2, ×3)
Series: 2, 4, 12, 14, 42, …
Find the next term.
Solution:
- Pattern: +2, ×3, +2, ×3 …
- 2 + 2 = 4
- 4 × 3 = 12
- 12 + 2 = 14
- 14 × 3 = 42
- Next operation after ×3 is +2.
- 42 + 2 = 44.
Example 3 (Letter Series – forward shift)
Series: K, N, Q, T, …
Find the next letter.
Solution:
- Convert to positions: K=11, N=14, Q=17, T=20.
- Differences: +3 each time.
- Next position = 20 + 3 = 23 → letter W.
Example 4 (Letter Series – mixed forward/backward)
Series: C, F, I, L, O, …
Find the missing term after O.
Solution:
- Positions: C=3, F=6, I=9, L=12, O=15.
- Constant difference = +3.
- Next position = 15 + 3 = 18 → letter R.
Example 5 (Number Series – second difference constant)
Series: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, …
Find the next term.
Solution:
- First differences: 4, 6, 8, 10 …
- Second differences: 2, 2, 2 … (constant).
- Hence first differences increase by 2 each time.
- Next first difference = 10 + 2 = 12.
- Next term = 30 + 12 = 42.
4. Shortcuts and tricks
- Look for simple patterns first – AP, GP, alternating operations, square/cube.
- Write down differences (first and second) to reveal hidden AP.
- Check digit‑sum when numbers look irregular (e.g., 23 → 2+3=5, then add 5).
- For letters, always map to numbers; after finding the numeric rule, convert back.
- If series repeats after a fixed number of terms, treat it as a cycle and use modulo arithmetic.
- When two interleaved sequences exist, separate odd‑position and even‑position terms and solve each individually.
5. Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a single rule when two different rules are interleaved.
- Ignoring the possibility of a decreasing pattern; always check both + and –.
- Forgetting the wrap‑around for letters (after Z comes A).
- Mis‑reading the difference as constant when only the second difference is constant.
- Over‑complicating: many exam series are based on the simplest observable rule.
