Statement and Conclusion: Notes और MCQ Practice

General Intelligence and Reasoning • RRB NTPC Graduate, SSC CHSL

Golden Rules for Solving:

  2. Extreme Words Rule: जिन Conclusions में Only, Always, Never, All, Definitely
  3. Moderate Words Rule: Conclusions जिनमें Some, Many, Can, Probable, Often
  4. No Assumption: Conclusion हमेशा Derived Result होना चाहिए, कोई Guess या Assumption नहीं।

2 Quick Tricks:

2 Common Mistakes:

Statement and Conclusion - RRB NTPC Reasoning

1. Concept

In verbal reasoning questions on Statement and Conclusion, you are provided with one or more statements followed by two or more conclusions.

  • Statement: A set of sentences given as facts. In this test, you must accept the statement as 100% true, even if it contradicts real-world facts.
  • Conclusion: An undeniable fact, deduction, or inference drawn directly from the given statement without making wild guesses or bringing in personal knowledge.

A conclusion follows only if it is derived directly, logically, and completely from the information provided in the statement.

2. Important Rules and Facts

  1. The Statement is Absolute Truth: Treat the given statement as an undisputed boundary. Do not verify it against everyday reality.
  2. No External Information: Never import personal biases, general knowledge, or real-life facts that are not explicitly stated or logically implied.
  3. Extreme Words Rule (High Risk):
  • Words such as all, always, every, only, never, completely, impossible, definitely indicate rigidity.
  • Conclusions containing these words usually do not follow, unless the statement specifically uses the same extreme terms.
  1. Moderate Words Rule (Safe Inferences):
  • Words such as some, many, few, usually, sometimes, can, may, often indicate flexibility.
  • Conclusions containing these terms are more likely to be logically valid.
  1. Advices / Remedies: A conclusion that suggests an effective, practical solution directly addressing the core problem stated usually follows.
  2. No Speculation: If an outcome is merely a possibility rather than a necessary result, it cannot be accepted as a definite conclusion.

3. Solved Examples (Exam Style)

Example 1

Statement:

In a one-day cricket match, the total runs scored by a team were 200. Out of these, 160 runs were scored by spinners.

Conclusions:

I. 80% of the team consists of spinners.

II. The opening batsmen were spinners.

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Check Conclusion I: The statement only tells us about the proportion of runs (160 out of 200 = 80%), not the composition of players in the 11-member team. Thus, Conclusion I does not follow.
  2. Check Conclusion II: The statement does not mention batting positions or who opened the innings. Thus, Conclusion II does not follow.

Answer: Neither I nor II follows.

Example 2

Statement:

Company X has decided to manufacture only electric two-wheelers starting next year in order to minimize vehicular emissions.

Conclusions:

I. Electric two-wheelers cause lower emissions than conventional fuel-based two-wheelers.

II. Company X will stop producing petrol-driven two-wheelers from next year.

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Check Conclusion I: Company X adopts electric models specifically to "minimize vehicular emissions." This directly implies that electric models cause lower emissions. Hence, Conclusion I follows.
  2. Check Conclusion II: The statement explicitly says the company will manufacture "only electric two-wheelers." Therefore, production of petrol-driven two-wheelers must cease next year. Hence, Conclusion II follows.

Answer: Both I and II follow.

Example 3

Statement:

Regular morning exercise improves physical stamina and mental alertness in adults.

Conclusions:

I. All adults who do not exercise in the morning have low stamina.

II. Morning exercise is beneficial for adult health.

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Check Conclusion I: The statement claims morning exercise improves stamina, but it does not claim that morning exercise is the only way to have stamina. The word "All" makes this an extreme, invalid deduction. Thus, Conclusion I does not follow.
  2. Check Conclusion II: Improving physical stamina and mental alertness is directly synonymous with being beneficial for health. Thus, Conclusion II follows directly.

Answer: Only conclusion II follows.

Example 4

Statement:

Only those applicants who have scored at least 60% marks in graduation are eligible to apply for Post P. Rohan scored 72% marks in graduation.

Conclusions:

I. Rohan is eligible to apply for Post P.

II. Rohan will definitely get selected for Post P.

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Check Conclusion I: The cutoff is 60%. Rohan scored 72%, which is ≥ 60%. Therefore, he fulfills the eligibility criterion. Conclusion I follows.
  2. Check Conclusion II: Eligibility to apply does not guarantee final selection. The statement says nothing about selection results. Conclusion II does not follow.

Answer: Only conclusion I follows.

4. Shortcuts and Tricks

  • The Boundary Test: Draw an imaginary circle around the statement. Any fact sitting outside that circle is automatically invalid.
  • Keyword Scanning:
  • If you see only, all, best, never in a conclusion, verify if the statement strictly justifies that exclusivity. If not, eliminate it immediately.
  • If you see some, probable, can be, check if there is partial support in the text. Usually, these conclusions hold true.
  • Direct Implication Check: Ask yourself: "If the statement is true, can the conclusion ever be false?" If the answer is yes (even in one edge case), the conclusion does not follow.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Confusing 'Assumption' with 'Conclusion':
  • An assumption is something taken for granted before writing the statement.
  • A conclusion is a logical end-product derived after reading the statement.
  1. Relying on General Knowledge (GK): In real life, spinach is healthy. But if the statement says "Eating spinach causes fatigue," you must accept that fatigue is the outcome for that specific problem.
  2. Equating Correlation with Exclusivity: If A leads to B, do not conclude that B can only happen through A.
  3. Over-extending the Scope: Do not project future scenarios or predict remote consequences unless stated directly.
