Syllogism: Notes और MCQ Practice
General Intelligence and Reasoning • SSC CGL, RRB NTPC Graduate, RRB Paramedical, SSC CHSL
Important Rules & Cases:
- Four Basic Relations:
- All (सभी): All A are B (A का 100% हिस्सा B के अंदर है)।
- Some (कुछ): Some A are B (A और B में कुछ common part है)।
- No (कोई नहीं): No A is B (A और B में कोई relation नहीं है, cross × relation)।
- Some Not (कुछ नहीं): Some A are not B (A का कुछ हिस्सा B में कभी नहीं जाएगा)।
- Either-Or Case Conditions (ये तीनों conditions satisfy होनी चाहिए):
- दोनों Conclusions individual रूप से गलत (doubtful) होने चाहिए।
- दोनों Conclusions के Elements (Subject & Predicate) same होने चाहिए।
- एक Conclusion positive (+) होना चाहिए और दूसरा negative (-) (जैसे: Some + No, या All + Some Not)।
2 Quick Tricks:
2 Common Mistakes (बचकर रहना!):
- Real World Logic लगाना: Statement में लिखा है "All pens are cats" तो इसे सच मानो! अपना extra brain लगाकर इसे real life से compare मत करना।
- Some से Some Not assume करना: अगर दिया है "Some A are B", तो खुद से यह assume मत कर लेना कि "Some A are not B" भी सही होगा। बचे हुए हिस्से के बारे में हम sure नहीं कह सकते।
Syllogism: SSC CGL Reasoning Study Notes
1. Concept
Syllogism is a core topic in deductive reasoning. In these questions, you are given two or more statements followed by several conclusions.
- Fundamental Golden Rule: You must take the given statements to be 100% true, even if they contradict known real-world facts (e.g., "All dogs are cats").
- Deductive Nature: A conclusion follows only if it is mathematically and logically derived from the given statements under every possible scenario.
- Standard Tool: The most reliable and visually intuitive technique to solve syllogisms in competitive exams is the Venn Diagram method.
2. Important Formulas, Rules, and Facts
Types of Propositions
- A-Type (Universal Affirmative): "All A are B" (Circle A is entirely inside Circle B).
- E-Type (Universal Negative): "No A is B" (Circle A and Circle B are completely disjoint; separated with a cross barrier).
- I-Type (Particular Affirmative): "Some A are B" (Circle A and Circle B overlap by at least one common element).
- O-Type (Particular Negative): "Some A are not B" (At least a portion of circle A must stay outside circle B).
Definite vs. Possibility Rules
- Definite Conclusion: Must be true in all valid Venn diagram arrangements. If it fails even in one valid diagram, it does not follow.
- Possibility Conclusion: Must be true in at least one valid Venn diagram arrangement without violating any given statements.
General Logical Rules
- Positive Statements Rule: From purely positive statements ("All", "Some"), no definite negative conclusion ("No", "Some not") can ever follow.
- Negative Statements Rule: If two elements are directly restricted by a "No" relation, no positive conclusion between them can follow.
- Open Boundary Rule: If there is no negative constraint specified between two elements, any "possibility" between them is logically valid.
The "Either - Or" Conditions (Complementary Pairs)
For a pair of conclusions to form an "Either - Or" case, all three conditions must be met simultaneously:
- Both individual conclusions must be independently doubtful (false when tested for 100% certainty).
- Both conclusions must have the identical subject and predicate.
- The conclusions must form a valid complementary pair:
- Some + No
- All + Some not
(Note: "All + No" and "Some + Some not" do NOT form an Either-Or pair).
Modern Exam Keywords
- Some: "At least some", "A few", "Many", "Most", "Generally", "1% to 99%".
- All: "Every", "Each", "Any", "100%".
- No: "None", "Never", "Not a single", "0%".
- Only A are B: Means "All B are A" (and B cannot belong to any other group).
3. Solved Examples (Exam Style)
Example 1: Basic Overlap and Containment
Statements:
- All cars are buses.
- All buses are trains.
Conclusions:
I. Some trains are cars.
II. All cars are trains.
Step-by-step Solution:
- Draw the Basic Diagram:
- Place circle 'Cars' completely inside circle 'Buses'.
- Place circle 'Buses' completely inside circle 'Trains'.
- Check Conclusion I ("Some trains are cars"):
- Since 'Cars' is inside 'Buses', and 'Buses' is inside 'Trains', 'Cars' lies inside 'Trains'. Therefore, a portion of 'Trains' is occupied by 'Cars'.
- Conclusion I is definitely true.
- Check Conclusion II ("All cars are trains"):
- Since the entire 'Cars' circle is within 'Trains', this directly follows.
- Conclusion II is definitely true.
Answer: Both conclusion I and conclusion II follow.
Example 2: Negative and Positive Mixed Statements
Statements:
- Some fruits are apples.
- No apple is a vegetable.
Conclusions:
I. Some fruits are not vegetables.
II. No fruit is a vegetable.
Step-by-step Solution:
- Draw the Basic Diagram:
- Draw circle 'Fruits' overlapping with circle 'Apples'.
- Draw circle 'Vegetables' completely separated from 'Apples' with a restricted line/cross.
- Check Conclusion I ("Some fruits are not vegetables"):
- The specific portion of 'Fruits' that overlaps with 'Apples' can never enter the 'Vegetables' circle (because no Apple can be a Vegetable).
- That part of Fruits will always remain outside Vegetables.
- Hence, "Some fruits are not vegetables" is definitely true.
- Check Conclusion II ("No fruit is a vegetable"):
- The remaining part of 'Fruits' (outside Apples) has no restriction against 'Vegetables'. They could overlap in an alternate diagram.
- Since it is not definitely separated in all cases, a universal negative does not follow.
- Conclusion II is false.
Answer: Only conclusion I follows.
Example 3: "Either-Or" Case
Statements:
- Some pens are erasers.
- Some erasers are rulers.
Conclusions:
I. Some pens are rulers.
II. No pen is a ruler.
Step-by-step Solution:
- Draw the Basic Diagram:
- Draw circle 'Pens' intersecting with 'Erasers'.
- Draw circle 'Erasers' intersecting with 'Rulers'.
- In the basic diagram, 'Pens' and 'Rulers' do not touch.
- Evaluate Individual Conclusions:
- Conclusion I: "Some pens are rulers" is not verified by the basic diagram. (Doubtful / False).
- Conclusion II: "No pen is a ruler" holds in the basic diagram, but we can easily draw an overlapping diagram without violating statements. Thus, it is not 100% certain. (Doubtful / False).
- Check Either-Or Conditions:
- Both conclusions are individually doubtful: Yes.
- Subject ('pens') and Predicate ('rulers') are identical: Yes.
- Pair combination: "Some" + "No" (Valid complementary pair): Yes.
Answer: Either conclusion I or conclusion II follows.
Example 4: Possibility-Based Question
Statements:
- All tables are chairs.
- Some chairs are beds.
Conclusions:
I. All tables being beds is a possibility.
II. Some beds are not chairs.
Step-by-step Solution:
- Evaluate Conclusion I (Possibility):
- Can we expand the circle of 'Beds' to cover all 'Tables' while still keeping 'Some chairs are beds' valid?
- Yes, because there is no negative restriction between 'Tables' and 'Beds'.
- Since it works in at least one valid Venn diagram, the possibility is true.
- Evaluate Conclusion II (Definite Statement):
- We know "Some chairs are beds". However, in logic, this does not automatically guarantee that "Some beds are not chairs".
- All beds could potentially be chairs.
- Since it is not definitely guaranteed in all cases, Conclusion II does not follow.
Answer: Only conclusion I follows.
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- The Minimal Overlap Technique (Basic Diagram): Always draw circles with the bare minimum overlap required by the statements. Never assume an overlap unless explicitly stated.
- Universal Inward / Outward Shortcut:
- When moving Outward (Inner circle to Outer circle: All A are B, All B are C):
- "All" is TRUE.
- "Some" is TRUE.
- When moving Inward (Outer circle to Inner circle: C to A):
- "Some" is TRUE.
- "All" is FALSE (Doubtful).
- No Cross-Sign = Possibility is True: If two circles do not have a cross/restriction line drawn between them directly or via their parent circles, almost any possibility between them is logically TRUE.
- Conversion Rules:
- "All A are B" converts directly to "Some B are A".
- "No A is B" converts directly to "No B is A".
- "Some A are B" converts directly to "Some B are A".
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying Real-World Logic: Never evaluate conclusions based on practical truth. Stick strictly to the premises.
- The "Some" Trap: In common language, "Some" implies "Some, but not all". In syllogism, "Some" means "At least one, possibly all". Thus, "All A are B" automatically validates "Some A are B".
- Confusing Definite with Possible: If a conclusion says "A is B", do not accept it just because it can happen. Definite conclusions require 100% certainty across every possible representation.
- False Either-Or Pairs: Remember that "All A are B" and "No A is B" is NOT an Either-Or pair (both can be false simultaneously if "Some A are B and Some A are not B"). Only "Some + No" and "All + Some not" are standard complementary pairs.
