Seating Arrangement: Notes और MCQ Practice
General Intelligence and Reasoning • SSC CGL, SSC CHSL
Core Rules & Directions
- Linear (Facing North): आपका Right = Person का Right, आपका Left = Person का Left।
- Linear (Facing South): बिल्कुल उलटा! आपका Right = Person का Left, आपका Left = Person का Right।
- Circular (Facing Inside/Center): Clockwise = Left turn, Anti-Clockwise = Right turn।
- Circular (Facing Outside): Clockwise = Right turn, Anti-Clockwise = Left turn।
- Connecting Words Rule:
- 'And' / 'But': हमेशा First Person के लिए Use होता है।
- 'Who' / 'Whom' / 'Which': हमेशा Immediate Neighbour (पास वाले व्यक्ति) के लिए Use होता है।
2 Quick Tricks
- Start with Definite Information: कभी भी Random Clue से शुरुआत मत करो। हमेशा उस Statement को चुनो जो किसी Person की Absolute Position तय करे (जैसे: "X पंक्ति के Extreme End पर है")।
- Parallel Diagram Method: जब भी 2 Possibilities दिखें, दिमाग में Solve करने की बजाय तुरंत 2 Parallel Cases बना लो। 2-3 Steps के बाद गलत Case अपने आप Eliminate हो जाएगा।
2 Common Mistakes to Avoid
- 'And' vs 'Who' में गड़बड़ी: "A is 2nd to the right of B, who is sitting next to C" — यहाँ 'who' B के लिए है, A के लिए नहीं! यह गलती पूरा Arrangement बिगाड़ देती है।
- Immediate vs Generic Position: "B is to the right of A" का मतलब यह नहीं कि B ठीक बगल में है; वह किसी भी Right Position पर हो सकता है, जब तक कि "Immediate Right" न लिखा हो।
Seating Arrangement - Complete Study Notes for SSC CGL
1. Concept
Seating Arrangement is one of the most scoring and frequently tested topics in the General Intelligence and Reasoning section of the SSC CGL examination.
In these questions, you are given a set of conditions regarding the positions of a group of people or objects. Your task is to arrange them in a logical sequence or layout according to the rules provided.
Types of Seating Arrangements:
- Linear Arrangement: People sit in a straight single line or in two parallel rows. They may face North, South, or each other.
- Circular Arrangement: People sit around a circle. They may face the center (inward), away from the center (outward), or a mix of both.
- Polygonal Arrangement (Square/Rectangular): People sit along the edges and corners of a polygon facing inward or outward.
2. Important Rules, Facts, and Terminology
Direction Fundamentals
- Facing North (Linear):
- Your Right Hand = Person's Right
- Your Left Hand = Person's Left
- Facing South (Linear):
- Your Right Hand = Person's Left
- Your Left Hand = Person's Right
- Circular - Facing Center (Inward):
- Movement in Clockwise direction = To the Left
- Movement in Anticlockwise direction = To the Right
- Circular - Facing Outside (Outward):
- Movement in Clockwise direction = To the Right
- Movement in Anticlockwise direction = To the Left
Crucial Language Rules (Connecting Words)
- "Who" / "Which" / "Whom": Refers to the immediately preceding person (the second person).
- Example: "A is sitting second to the left of B, who is facing North." -> B is facing North.
- "And" / "But" / "While": Refers to the subject introduced first (the first person).
- Example: "A is sitting second to the left of B and is facing North." -> A is facing North.
Position Rules
- "Immediate Left/Right": Directly adjacent with no person in between.
- "Between A and B": Can mean anywhere between them, but unless stated as "exactly between", ensure whether adjacent or not is specified.
- "Opposite to each other": In an even-numbered circle (e.g., 6 or 8 persons), opposite persons face each other directly across the center. For $N$ persons facing the center, opposite person is separated by $(N ÷ 2) - 1$ persons on either side.
3. Solved Examples
Example 1: Linear Arrangement (Single Row, Facing North)
Question: Five friends P, Q, R, S, and T are sitting in a row facing North.
- S is between T and Q.
- Q is to the immediate left of R.
- P is to the immediate left of T.
Who is sitting in the middle of the row?
Step-by-Step Solution:
- Everyone faces North, so Left is to our left, and Right is to our right.
- From clue 3: "P is to the immediate left of T" gives the block: [P, T].
- From clue 1: "S is between T and Q". Since P is already to the left of T, S and Q must be to the right of T: [P, T, S, Q].
- From clue 2: "Q is to the immediate left of R". Therefore, R is directly to the right of Q: [P, T, S, Q, R].
- The complete arrangement from left to right is: P - T - S - Q - R.
Answer: S is sitting in the middle.
Example 2: Circular Arrangement (Facing Center)
Question: Six persons A, B, C, D, E, and F are sitting around a circular table facing the center.
- A is second to the left of C.
- B is to the immediate right of D.
- F is opposite to A.
- E is not adjacent to C.
Who sits to the immediate left of F?
Step-by-Step Solution:
- Draw a circle with 6 equally spaced seats.
- Place C at the bottom. Since everyone faces the center, left is clockwise and right is anticlockwise.
- "A is second to the left of C": Count 2 places clockwise from C. Place A.
- "F is opposite to A": Place F directly across from A.
- Now, positions for B, D, and E remain. "B is to the immediate right of D": D and B must sit together with B one step anticlockwise from D.
- "E is not adjacent to C": Therefore, E cannot take the empty slot next to C. E must take the remaining slot near F or A.
- Test remaining slots: The only two adjacent empty spots that fit the [D -> B (anticlockwise)] pair leave the remaining isolated spot for E (which is safely away from C).
- Looking around the circle in clockwise order: C -> [Empty] -> A -> F's neighbor -> F -> C's neighbor.
- Slots directly adjacent are between F and C or between A and C.
- By testing, D is to the immediate right of C (anticlockwise), B is to the immediate right of D, and E sits between A and F.
- The full clockwise arrangement is: C -> D -> B -> A -> E -> F.
- Looking at F (facing center): Immediate left means moving in the clockwise direction from F, which leads to C.
Answer: C sits to the immediate left of F.
Example 3: Parallel Rows (Facing Each Other)
Question: Six persons are sitting in two parallel rows containing three persons each.
- Row 1: P, Q, R (all facing South)
- Row 2: X, Y, Z (all facing North)
Each member in Row 1 faces a member in Row 2.
- Q is sitting opposite to Y.
- P is at the extreme right end of his row.
- Z is to the immediate left of X.
Who faces P?
Step-by-Step Solution:
- Understand orientations:
- Row 1 (facing South): Right is our Left, Left is our Right.
- Row 2 (facing North): Right is our Right, Left is our Left.
- "P is at the extreme right end of his row (Row 1)": Since Row 1 faces South, their right is our left. So P is at the leftmost position of Row 1 from our perspective.
- Row 1 (from our left to right): P, _, _
- "Z is to the immediate left of X" in Row 2 (facing North): Left is to our left, so this block is [Z, X].
- Since Row 2 has three seats and [Z, X] are adjacent, the third person Y must occupy the remaining seat.
- "Q is sitting opposite to Y": Since Y must be in Row 2, if Y is in the middle, Q is in the middle. If Y is at the right end, Q is at the right end.
- For Z and X to be together in Row 2, the order of Row 2 from our left to right must be Z, X, Y or Y, Z, X.
- If Row 2 is Z, X, Y, then Y is at the right end, meaning Q faces Y (right end of Row 1).
- That leaves R for the middle of Row 1: Row 1 = P, R, Q.
- Row 2 = Z, X, Y.
- Matching pairs: P faces Z, R faces X, Q faces Y.
Answer: Z faces P.
4. Shortcuts and Tricks
- The "Definite Information" Rule: Never start drawing with statements that contain multiple possibilities (e.g., "A is next to B"). Always start with a statement that fixes someone to an extreme end or a definite reference point.
- The 2-Case Method: If you encounter a statement with two possibilities (e.g., "X can be at seat 1 or seat 5"), draw two parallel diagrams immediately. Fill clues in both simultaneously until one case naturally violates a rule and eliminates itself.
- Clockwise vs. Anticlockwise Anchor:
- Facing Center: Left = Clockwise, Right = Anticlockwise.
- Memorize the phrase: "Clockwise is Left when looking inside."
- Opposite Pairs in Circles: For an even number of people ($N$) facing the center, person opposite to Seat 1 is always at Seat $(1 + N ÷ 2)$. (e.g., in an 8-person circle, opposite of 1 is $1 + 4 = 5$).
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Misinterpreting "Left" and "Right" for South-facing individuals: Many students default to their own left/right hands. Remember to flip your perspective upside down when a person faces South or outwards.
- Misreading Pronouns: Confusing "A sits third to the right of B, who is next to C". Remember: "who" belongs strictly to B, not A.
- Assuming Circular Symmetry: In an arrangement of an odd number of people (e.g., 5 or 7 people around a circle), nobody sits "exactly opposite" to anyone else unless the question defines it differently.
- Treating "Between" as "Immediately Between": If a question says "A is between B and C", it does not necessarily mean B and C are directly adjacent to A unless the word "exactly" or "immediately" is explicitly used.
