Statement Conclusion: Notes और MCQ Practice

General Intelligence and Reasoning • RRB NTPC UG

Most Important Rules:

  • Stick to the Statement: Conclusion Out of context बातें हमेशा Invalid होंगी।
  • Extreme Words Rule: अगर Conclusion में All, Always, Only, Never, Every
Some, Many, Often, Can, May
  • No Assumptions: Conclusion हमेशा Fact-based या Logical Deduction होना चाहिए, Assumption या Speculation नहीं।

2 Quick Tricks:

2 Common Mistakes:

Statement and Conclusion - Study Notes for RRB NTPC UG

1. Concept

In verbal reasoning, a Statement and Conclusion question tests your ability to comprehend a given piece of text and determine what logically follows from it.

  • Statement: A set of sentences providing specific facts, opinions, or data. For the exam, you must consider the statement to be 100% true, even if it contradicts commonly known facts.
  • Conclusion: A logical deduction, inference, or direct consequence derived strictly from the given statement. A conclusion is considered valid only if it cannot be false when the statement is true.

Your task is not to judge whether the statement is practically right or wrong in the real world, but to evaluate whether the conclusion follows directly from the information given.

2. Important Rules and Facts

  1. The Statement is Absolute Truth: Treat whatever is mentioned in the statement as unquestionable reality.
  2. No External Information: Never use your own prior general knowledge or personal beliefs. If something is not directly mentioned or clearly implied by the statement, it is invalid.
  3. Extreme Words Rule (High Probability of being False):

Conclusions containing absolute or extreme words usually do not follow:

  • Words like: Only, All, Always, Never, Every, Must, Entirely, None.
  1. Moderate Words Rule (High Probability of being True):

Conclusions using balanced, qualifying words often follow:

  • Words like: Some, Many, A few, Probably, Usually, May, Can.
  1. No Assumptions or Speculations: A conclusion must be a direct result of the statement, not a likely future prediction or an unstated assumption.
  2. Cause and Effect Link: If a conclusion claims that event 'B' happened because of event 'A', the statement must clearly establish that direct connection.

3. Solved Examples (Exam Style)

Example 1

Statement:

In a one-day cricket match, the total runs scored by a team were 200. Out of these, 160 runs were scored by spinners.

Conclusions:

I. 80% of the team consists of spinners.

II. The opening batsmen were spinners.

Solution:

  • Analysis of Statement: The statement talks only about the runs scored by spinners (160 out of 200 = 80% of the total runs). It says nothing about the total number of players who are spinners, nor does it state the batting order.
  • Evaluating Conclusion I: Scoring 80% of the runs does not mean 80% of the team members are spinners. One or two spinners could have scored all those runs. Hence, I does not follow.
  • Evaluating Conclusion II: There is no information regarding who opened the batting. Hence, II does not follow.

Correct Answer: Neither Conclusion I nor II follows.

Example 2

Statement:

Regular morning walks improve physical stamina and keep the mind refreshed throughout the day.

Conclusions:

I. People who do not go for morning walks feel tired all the time.

II. Morning walks are beneficial for both physical and mental well-being.

Solution:

  • Evaluating Conclusion I: The statement highlights the benefit of walking. It does not state that not walking leads to continuous fatigue (the extreme word "all the time" is also a red flag). Hence, I does not follow.
  • Evaluating Conclusion II: Physical stamina refers to physical well-being, and keeping the mind refreshed refers to mental well-being. Therefore, morning walks benefit both. This directly summarizes the statement.

Correct Answer: Only Conclusion II follows.

Example 3

Statement:

Many creative thinkers struggle with structured 9-to-5 corporate jobs because rigid routines can suppress creative expression.

Conclusions:

I. All people working 9-to-5 jobs lack creativity.

II. Some creative people find rigid schedules challenging.

Solution:

  • Evaluating Conclusion I: The statement uses the word "Many", not "All". Also, it does not state that people in 9-to-5 jobs completely lack creativity. The word "All" makes this an extreme and incorrect conclusion. Hence, I does not follow.
  • Evaluating Conclusion II: The statement explicitly says "many creative thinkers struggle... because rigid routines can suppress...". "Many" directly supports the moderate word "Some". Hence, II follows.

Correct Answer: Only Conclusion II follows.

Example 4

Statement:

Due to heavy rainfall, the municipal corporation has advised residents to boil drinking water before consumption to prevent waterborne diseases.

Conclusions:

I. Water supplied during heavy rains may carry disease-causing germs.

II. Boiling water kills germs that cause waterborne diseases.

Solution:

  • Evaluating Conclusion I: Why did the corporation advise boiling water to prevent disease? Because water during heavy rains has a risk of contamination. Hence, I follows logically.
  • Evaluating Conclusion II: The advice to boil water specifically to prevent waterborne diseases is based on the fact that boiling purifies water and eliminates these pathogens. Hence, II follows.

Correct Answer: Both Conclusion I and II follow.

4. Shortcuts and Tricks

  1. The 'Negation' Test: If you negate the conclusion and the original statement remains completely unaffected, the conclusion does not strictly follow.
  2. Look for Scope Parity:
  • If Statement scope is Narrow (e.g., talks about a specific school), Conclusion cannot be Broad (e.g., talks about the entire nation's education system).
  • If Statement scope is Broad, Conclusion can sometimes be a narrow subset.
  1. Identify 'Advice' vs. 'Fact': If the statement reports a government advisory or notice, any conclusion explaining the general, logical purpose behind that advisory is usually valid.
  2. Spotting Extremes instantly: Scan conclusions first for words like Definitely, Completely, Solely, Only. In 90% of RRB NTPC questions, these conclusions are invalid unless the statement explicitly used matching absolute language.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying Real-Life Knowledge: If the statement says "Apples are blue", do not mark a conclusion wrong just because apples are red in real life.
  • Confusing 'Conclusion' with 'Course of Action': A conclusion is a deduction of what is true, not a suggestion of what should be done next.
  • Confusing 'Some' with 'All': If a statement says "Some medicines have side effects", you cannot conclude that "A medicine without side effects does not exist".
  • Over-extension (Reading between the lines too much): Do not add your own logical bridges. If statement says "A is taller than B", do not conclude "A is the tallest person in the room" unless specified.
